Key findings
Southwest Airlines said on Jun 17, 2026 that it will move from a largely on-premises environment to a cloud-based, AI- and agent-enabled architecture on Amazon Web Services by 2028, extending a preferred-cloud relationship with AWS that began in Mar 2023.
More than 2,700 Southwest Airlines developers used AWS's Kiro agentic coding service in Jun 2026, including to refactor legacy code behind Southwest.com, and Southwest is adopting an AI-driven development lifecycle in which engineers validate and own what agents produce.
Southwest Airlines runs enterprise AI from its Technology department under Lauren Woods, Executive Vice President and CIO since Dec 2025, where Justin Bundick, Vice President for Intelligence Platforms, leads machine learning, data science, generative AI and agentic AI in an organization his bios put at more than 125 or more than 250 people.
Southwest Airlines became the first U.S. airline with flight shopping inside ChatGPT on Oct 6, 2026, powered by OpenAI and AWS; customers still book on Southwest.com, and Tony Roach said on Oct 22, 2026 that usage numbers were still small.
Southwest Airlines reports no financial return from AI: its 2025 Form 10-K says generative AI copy testing contributed to higher sales per marketing effort without a figure, and the $6 million in projected annual savings from its Agentforce customer chat, live since Nov 2025, comes from a Salesforce customer story, not from Southwest.
Where Southwest sits
- Stage
- Experimenting
Southwest Airlines has reported no business return it credits to AI, for any use case or for the company as a whole: its 2025 Form 10-K says generative AI copy testing contributed to increased sales per marketing effort without giving a figure, and the $6 million in projected annual savings from Agentforce customer chat is a Salesforce projection that Southwest has not repeated in its filings or earnings calls. Southwest Airlines has not reported a company-wide AI rollout with a user count either: Lauren Woods, Executive Vice President and CIO, owns AI, but the only usage figure Southwest has published covers one function, more than 2,700 developers on AWS's Kiro (Jun 2026), and its AI Literacy program aims to equip every employee without saying how many of its 73,092 employees use AI tools. Southwest Airlines therefore stays at Experimenting; one return it credits to AI, or a reported count of employees using its AI tools, would move it to Piloting.

How they deploy
Cloud migration as the AI foundation
Southwest Airlines treats its move to Amazon Web Services as the base for AI. Southwest named AWS its preferred cloud provider in Mar 2023, when it planned a Redshift data architecture and a self-service machine learning platform on Amazon SageMaker, and said in Jun 2026 that it would leave a largely on-premises environment for a fully cloud-based, AI- and agent-enabled architecture on AWS by 2028. Lauren Woods said in Oct 2026 that a secure, scalable foundation for AI lets Southwest add new capabilities more quickly.
Buy the tools, build the solutions
Southwest Airlines buys AI tooling from AWS, including the Kiro coding agent and Amazon Quick, and from Salesforce, whose Agentforce runs in its customer chat, and builds its own solutions with a central AI organization that, according to Justin Bundick's bio, builds AI products used across nearly every department. Lauren Woods said in Jul 2026 that Southwest has used AI in operations and commercial systems for more than a decade, and that AI coding, testing and documentation tools have accelerated work on Southwest.com.
AI to lower the cost of service
Southwest Airlines listed building artificial intelligence capability for a digital-first customer care model among its efficiency actions at its Sep 2024 Investor Day, aiming to reduce calls per passenger, cut average handle time, improve service levels and raise workforce utilization. Southwest's 2025 Form 10-K says the airline modernized its chat functions and added AI-based support for service replies in 2025, and Salesforce says Southwest began a phased rollout of Agentforce in Help Center chat in Nov 2025.
An in-house engineering center in Hyderabad
Southwest Airlines opened its first Global Innovation Centre outside the U.S. in Hyderabad, India on May 20, 2026, to move work from outside vendors to its own employees, with a plan to grow past 1,000 people and AI and machine learning among its focus areas. Lauren Woods told Analytics India Magazine in May 2026 that Southwest wants to be AI first and is not building another vendor setup.
Test and learn with customer-facing AI
Southwest Airlines calls its ChatGPT plugin the first step in a phased AI booking approach with OpenAI and AWS (Oct 2026), and Sabrina Callahan, its first Chief Digital and Marketing Officer, described it as an example of how Southwest tests and learns with AI. Tony Roach said on Oct 22, 2026 that the plugin exists to give Southwest early learnings on how AI agents may change airline distribution.
- Deployment model
- Southwest Airlines runs AI from a central Technology department led by Executive Vice President and CIO Lauren Woods. Vice presidents of technology pair with each part of the business (customer and commercial, air operations and reservations, technical and ground operations, people and finance), alongside shared groups for data and architecture, infrastructure and services, cybersecurity, and intelligence platforms, the enterprise AI group led by Justin Bundick. Business leaders own customer-facing uses: Sabrina Callahan for digital and marketing, including the ChatGPT plugin, and Kevin McDorman for customer care. Southwest Airlines also formed a Global Innovation Centre in Hyderabad, India in Nov 2025 and opened it in May 2026 to move some critical business functions from outside vendors to its own employees.
- Model providers
- Southwest Airlines has not said which large language models power its customer chat, marketing copy tests or internal tools. The AI suppliers Southwest names are AWS, whose Kiro agentic coding service more than 2,700 developers used in Jun 2026 and whose Amazon Quick Southwest is adopting, and OpenAI, whose ChatGPT hosts the Southwest flight shopping plugin launched on Oct 6, 2026. Salesforce says Southwest Airlines has run its Agentforce assistant in Help Center chat since Nov 2025. Analytics India Magazine reported in May 2026 that Southwest counts AWS, Salesforce, OpenAI and Anthropic in its AI ecosystem; Southwest has announced no agreement with Anthropic. In Mar 2023 Southwest Airlines said its developers were building a self-service machine learning platform on Amazon SageMaker so data scientists could build, train and deploy models for any use case.
- Data and infrastructure
- Southwest Airlines described its technology estate in Jun 2026 as a largely on-premises environment and set 2028 as the target for a fully cloud-based environment on AWS. AWS has been Southwest's preferred cloud since Mar 2023, when Southwest ran a new pricing and flight shopping data system on AWS Lambda and Amazon S3 and planned a modern data architecture on Amazon Redshift; Marty Garza's newsroom bio says crew systems have also moved to AWS. Bob Jordan credited the technology team in Dec 2025 with moving Southwest to a modern cloud and data infrastructure, and the 2025 Form 10-K shows third-party software maintenance expense up $64 million in 2025 on expanded cloud-based services. Southwest Airlines runs customer and employee service on Salesforce Service Cloud, and Salesforce says Agentforce answers from approved knowledge content and Service Cloud data in Salesforce's cloud. The Southwest plugin in ChatGPT runs inside OpenAI's service, which Southwest says it does not operate or control, and bookings are completed on Southwest.com.

Economics & controls
Spend and ROI
Technology budget
Southwest Airlines last put a figure on technology spending in Feb 2023, when it said investments, upgrades and system maintenance would total about $1.3 billion that year. Southwest's 2025 Form 10-K reports a $64 million rise in third-party software maintenance expense in 2025, driven by expanded cloud-based services, and CFO Tom Doxey said in Apr 2026 that after a period of catch-up the technology budget could ease back while the transformation continues, producing some savings.
What AI costs
Southwest Airlines has not disclosed what it spends on AI, on model usage, on Agentforce or on the move to AWS planned for completion in 2028.
Reported ROI
Southwest Airlines reports no dollar or percentage return from AI. The 2025 Form 10-K says generative AI copy testing contributed to increased sales per marketing effort without a figure, and the Sep 2024 Investor Day set goals for AI in customer care (fewer calls per passenger, shorter handle times, higher workforce utilization) without targets or later results. Salesforce's Sep 2026 customer story cites $6 million in projected annual savings and a sevenfold return from Agentforce, vendor projections that Southwest Airlines has not repeated in its filings or earnings calls. Bob Jordan said in Oct 2025 that back-office work to automate transactions was showing good results, again without a number, and the 2025 Form 10-K warns that AI adoption may not deliver the anticipated benefits.
Headcount
Southwest Airlines had 73,092 active full-time equivalent employees at Sep 30, 2026, up 1.2% in a year. Southwest cut about 1,750 roles, about 15% of corporate positions, in Feb 2025 to save about $300 million in 2026, a reduction it tied to its transformation plan, with no mention of AI. Southwest Airlines plans to keep corporate headcount expense flat to 2025 levels in 2026, and opened a Global Innovation Centre in Hyderabad, India in May 2026 to move some work from outside vendors to its own employees.
Governance and risk
Board oversight
Southwest Airlines' Audit Committee oversees cybersecurity, technology and AI-related risks and management's efforts to mitigate them, and the full Board also oversees AI risk, according to the 2025 Form 10-K and the 2026 proxy statement. The CIO and CISO report to the Audit Committee periodically on technology, data protection and cybersecurity, and director Patricia Watson brings experience implementing generative AI solutions as a former chief information officer.
AI governance team and acceptable use
Southwest Airlines has an internal AI governance team (2025 Form 10-K) and an AI Acceptable Use Policy. Southwest says every AI tool goes through a multi-step review of the data and personal information it uses, the accuracy and quality of its output, and its safety and security implications, and is approved only once safeguards are in place. Lauren Woods said in Jul 2026 that AI-assisted software still goes through the same testing, validation and operational readiness reviews.
AI literacy
Southwest Airlines runs an AI Literacy program meant to help every employee, at all skill levels, use AI tools, built on four pillars: training and development, change management, AI governance in line with the acceptable use policy, and communities of practice. Southwest says human oversight keeps AI accountable, and in its agent-driven software development model engineering teams remain responsible for validating and owning the results.
Customer-facing AI
Southwest Airlines tells ChatGPT plugin users that OpenAI, not Southwest, operates ChatGPT, that AI-generated responses may contain errors, and that Southwest.com information applies at booking if the two differ. Customers cannot book, pay or sign in to Rapid Rewards inside ChatGPT; those steps stay on Southwest.com or the Southwest app. Salesforce says Southwest's Agentforce chat answers only from approved knowledge content and hands cases it cannot resolve to service agents.
Disclosed risks and regulation
Southwest Airlines' 2025 Form 10-K says the company is expanding its use of AI and machine learning and lists risks including cybersecurity vulnerabilities, algorithmic bias or errors, intellectual property claims, reputational harm and competitors adopting AI faster. Southwest Airlines also cites emerging state AI laws, including in California and Colorado, that may require formal AI governance, designated oversight staff, documented risk assessments and regular compliance reviews.

- Southwest Airlines has reported no business return it credits to AI, for any use case or for the company as a whole: its 2025 Form 10-K says generative AI copy testing contributed to increased sales per marketing effort without giving a figure, and the $6 million in projected annual savings from Agentforce customer chat is a Salesforce projection that Southwest has not repeated in its filings or earnings calls.
