Key findings
American Airlines has run machine learning in its operation for years: Smart Gating, built in-house and launched at Dallas Fort Worth in Nov 2021, assigned gates at five hubs in 2025 and cut taxi time by a combined 17 hours a day, according to the 2025 Sustainability Report published in Jul 2026.
American Airlines manages generative AI through a centralized center of excellence led by its IT department, with a steering committee, a core team and a generative AI product team, and its board's Audit Committee oversees AI risk (2025 Sustainability Report, Jul 2026; proxy statement, Apr 2026).
Ganesh Jayaram, Chief Information Officer of Deere & Company before he joined American Airlines as Executive Vice President and Chief Digital and Information Officer in Sep 2022, said in Sep 2026 that the airline uses AI to help its technology teams accelerate development.
American Airlines' customer generative AI is early: the airline tested a generative AI chat assistant for weather rebooking in Jun 2025 and began rolling out a generative AI trip-planning tool on aa.com in Oct 2025, and has published no usage figures for either.
American Airlines has published no current business return credited to AI and no count of employees using AI tools: the nearly $1 billion in annual run-rate savings it expects by the end of 2026 comes from reengineering that combines technology, procurement and process changes, with no AI share, and AI did not come up on its Oct 22, 2026 earnings call.
Where American sits
- Stage
- Experimenting
American Airlines has reported no current business return it credits to AI, at firm level or for any one tool: its fuel estimate for Smart Gating, its in-house machine learning gate assignment tool, dates from May 2024, and the 2025 Sustainability Report restates only the tool's taxi time and emissions savings, with no fuel or cost figure. American Airlines credits the nearly $1 billion in annual run-rate savings it expects from reengineering by the end of 2026 to technology, procurement and process work combined, with no AI share, and AI did not come up on its Oct 22, 2026 earnings call. American Airlines has not reported a company-wide AI rollout with a count of employees using AI tools either, though Chief Digital and Information Officer Ganesh Jayaram's IT department leads a generative AI center of excellence. That leaves American Airlines at Experimenting although machine learning runs in production in gating, forecasting and crew planning; a recent cost, fuel or revenue return it credits to AI, or a company-wide user count with a named owner, would move it to Piloting.

How they deploy
Operational AI built in-house
American Airlines said in Jan 2025 that AI is nothing new to the airline and has been at play across it for decades, from machine learning that shows rebooking options to models that forecast loads, block times and crew needs. Ganesh Jayaram told The Dallas Morning News in Jul 2024 that American Airlines does a lot of AI but does not publicize much of it. American Airlines builds its operational tools with its own IT and Operations teams: Smart Gating (Nov 2021), HEAT (Apr 2022) and a 2025 tool that flags at-risk connections were all developed in-house.
AI supports decisions, people make them
American Airlines says its AI is meant to strengthen human decision-making, not replace it (Jan 2025). The airline's operational tools recommend and staff decide: the connection tool suggests short departure holds to airport teams when operationally appropriate, and dispatchers kept full discretion over contrail-avoiding flight plans in the 2025 trial.
Generative AI run centrally
Ganesh Jayaram said in Jul 2024 that American Airlines' generative AI focus was internal productivity and efficiency, with AI-personalized offers to customers to follow once privacy questions are settled. American Airlines said in Jan 2025 that it was taking a centralized approach to generative AI and setting up a governance framework to scale it. The 2025 Sustainability Report, published in Jul 2026, describes the result: a center of excellence led by IT, with a steering committee that prioritizes and approves use cases, a core team and a generative AI product team.
AI in fare filing, not fare setting
American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said on the Jul 24, 2025 earnings call that using AI to set individual fares, as Delta Air Lines was testing, is not appropriate and not something American Airlines will do. Vice Chair Steve Johnson said in Sep 2025 that AI will help American Airlines keep competitive the very large number of fares it files three times a day, and the airline told The Points Guy that any AI tools it might consider are about saving time and that it would not personalize fares with individual customer data.
A tech-first mindset and product teams
Ganesh Jayaram told investors in Mar 2024 that American Airlines was moving to an organization-wide tech-first mindset, shifting from projects to a product model with persistent teams and adding leaders with deep technical expertise. American Airlines presented the effort as reengineering the airline with technology, with Smart Gating and HEAT as its examples.
AI as one lever in reengineering
American Airlines said on Oct 22, 2026 that it keeps looking for ways to use technology, automation and AI to simplify the business and give team members better decision tools, within a multiyear reengineering program that also covers procurement and process changes. American Airlines has not said how much of the program's savings comes from AI.
- Deployment model
- American Airlines runs AI through its central IT organization under Chief Digital and Information Officer Ganesh Jayaram, with operational tools built jointly by IT and Operations teams and used in the Integrated Operations Center and the Hub Control Centers. Generative AI runs through a center of excellence led by IT, whose steering committee prioritizes use cases, approves solutions and checks them against regulation, ethics, transparency, data privacy, security and audit requirements (Jul 2026). American Airlines also develops early-career technologists through its two-year ADEPT program, whose team used AI-enabled tools to design and build a seat-monitoring app feature launched in Sep 2026.
- Model providers
- American Airlines has not named the large language models behind its generative AI chat assistant or trip-planning tool. American Airlines' 2025 Form 10-K, filed Feb 18, 2026, says the airline uses AI and machine learning technologies, including some licensed from third parties, that it cannot control the availability or pricing of those third-party technologies, and that providers could change their terms or end the relationship. Microsoft said in May 2022 that American Airlines was taking a cloud-first approach to data, AI and Microsoft's collaboration platforms. For contrail avoidance, American Airlines has used forecasts from Google Research, which used AI to build contrail prediction maps for the 2023 test flights; for the 2025 trial, Google's machine learning contrail forecast was integrated into the Flightkeys flight planning platform American Airlines uses (Mar 2026).
- Data and infrastructure
- American Airlines chose Microsoft Azure as its preferred cloud for airline applications and key workloads in May 2022 and planned to move its data warehouse and several legacy applications into one Operations Hub on Azure; Smart Gating is built on Azure. American Airlines' reservation system is hosted and maintained by a third-party provider under a long-term contract (2025 Form 10-K), and the airline has not said whether it runs AI in its own data centers. American Airlines says it handles large volumes of data from many sources, and its generative AI steering committee checks products against data privacy, security and audit protocols (Jul 2026).
Platforms and internal tools
Smart GatingNov 2021
Smart Gating is an in-house tool, developed by American Airlines' IT and Operations teams, that uses real-time flight data and machine learning to send each arriving aircraft to the nearest available gate with the shortest taxi. Smart Gating started at Dallas Fort Worth, reached Charlotte, Miami, Washington Reagan and Chicago O'Hare by Nov 2023, and at Dallas Fort Worth cut taxi times by about two minutes a flight and on-the-ground gate changes by more than half (Nov 2023). American Airlines and Microsoft said in May 2022 that the gating program was built on Azure and applied AI, machine learning and data analytics to cut taxi time.

HEAT (Hub Efficiency Analytics Tool)Apr 2022
HEAT is an in-house analytics tool in American Airlines' Integrated Operations Center whose algorithm weighs weather, loads, customer connections, gates and air traffic and crew constraints, then shifts arrivals and departures at a hub before severe weather hits. American Airlines describes HEAT as an advanced algorithm, not as AI, and used it 26% more in 2025 than in 2024 as irregular operations rose (Jul 2026).
Connection-saving tool (Connect Assist)2025
American Airlines' connection-saving tool, built in-house and called Connect Assist in press coverage (Afar, Dec 2025), flags departing flights carrying customers at risk of missing a connection and recommends a short hold to airport teams when it does not harm the rest of the schedule. Sam Liyanage, American Airlines' Vice President of Digital Customer Experience, said in Dec 2025 that the tight-connection technology uses data and AI to analyze live operational conditions. The tool started in tests at Dallas Fort Worth and Charlotte in Jun 2025 and helped more than 16,000 customers make their connections in 2025; an American Airlines spokesperson said held flights wait 10 minutes on average.

- American Airlines has reported no current business return it credits to AI, at firm level or for any one tool: its fuel estimate for Smart Gating, its in-house machine learning gate assignment tool, dates from May 2024, and the 2025 Sustainability Report restates only the tool's taxi time and emissions savings, with no fuel or cost figure.
