Siemens deploys AI on two tracks: SiemensGPT, an employee platform built on AWS with models from several providers, and industrial AI products such as the Industrial Copilot and the Eigen Engineering Agent, tested first in its own factories. An AWS case study counted 80,000 monthly SiemensGPT users in Oct 2026, a figure Siemens has not published itself. Managing Board member Peter Koerte owns Data and AI, and Siemens committed more than €1 billion over three years to AI offerings but has reported no business return it credits to AI.

Their approach to AI

The platform
SiemensGPT, an internal platform Siemens built on AWS with implementation partner FNTIO, gives employees vendor-agnostic access to large language models and a no-code builder for bots and agents (AWS case study, Oct 2026).
The models
SiemensGPT offers models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Meta among about 50 (FNTIO, Mar 2026); Siemens built its Industrial Copilot on Microsoft's Azure OpenAI Service (Oct 2023) and said in Jan 2026 it will add NVIDIA Nemotron models to its chip design software.
The reach
SiemensGPT had 150,000 registered users, 80,000 of them active each month (AWS, Oct 2026), against about 317,000 Siemens employees, Siemens Healthineers included (Jun 2026).
The catch
Siemens has not published a financial return from AI: Peter Koerte said in Jul 2025 that how much Siemens has saved is still an open question, and in Mar 2026 that AI is so embedded in its products that AI revenue is hard to isolate. Siemens' SiemensGPT user counts come from AWS and FNTIO case studies, not from Siemens itself.

Key findings

  1. SiemensGPT, the internal AI platform Siemens built on AWS, had 150,000 registered users and 80,000 monthly users according to an AWS case study updated in Oct 2026, and Siemens employees had built more than 15,000 bots on it between Oct 2024 and Jul 2025.

  2. Fortune reported in a Jul 2025 interview with Peter Koerte that Siemens had 460 distinct AI use cases in production and that about 27,000 software developers used coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot, with Koerte putting the productivity lift at 10% to 30% while calling the amount saved the open question.

  3. Siemens hired Vasi Philomin, Amazon's former Vice President of Generative AI, as Executive Vice President and Head of Data & AI on Jul 1, 2025, reporting to Managing Board member Peter Koerte, and on Nov 13, 2025 committed more than €1 billion over three years to scale its AI offerings, citing 1,500 AI experts.

  4. Siemens uses its own plants as AI test sites: the Erlangen electronics factory runs more than 100 AI algorithms and is the blueprint for the AI-driven factories Siemens and NVIDIA announced in Jan 2026, and the Nanjing factory runs more than 50 AI applications (Jan 2026).

  5. Siemens has not reported a financial return credited to AI; Peter Koerte said in Jul 2025 that Siemens hopes AI will double its pre-AI annual productivity target of 3% to 4%, and in Mar 2026 that AI is so embedded in its roughly 130 AI-augmented or AI-native products that its revenue is hard to isolate.

Stage
Experimenting

Siemens has reported no business return it credits to AI: Peter Koerte told Fortune in Jul 2025 that how much Siemens has saved is still the open question, said in Mar 2026 that AI is so embedded in Siemens products that AI revenue is hard to isolate, and the factory gains Siemens reports for Nanjing and Erlangen come from broader digital programs or are stated as potential. Siemens has not itself reported a company-wide AI rollout with a count of employees using its tools: the 150,000 registered and 80,000 monthly SiemensGPT users come from an AWS case study updated in Oct 2026 and the 120,000 users from implementation partner FNTIO, while Koerte's own figure, about 27,000 software developers using AI coding assistants (Jul 2025), covers one function. That leaves Siemens at Experimenting although Koerte owns Data and AI on the Managing Board and AI runs in production in its factories, shared services and sales; one cost, revenue or headcount return Siemens credits to AI, or a SiemensGPT user count Siemens publishes itself, would move it to Piloting.

How they deploy

AI for productivity, in products and as new products

Siemens said on Nov 13, 2025 that it uses AI in three ways: to raise innovation and productivity, to enhance existing offerings and to build new AI offerings, and made Grow AI one of four growth levers in its ONE Tech Company program. Siemens committed more than €1 billion over three years to scale its AI offerings and counted 1,500 AI experts across the company.

One internal platform, many model providers

Siemens decided in late 2023 to move from narrow, purpose-built AI tools to one AI platform for all employees, according to implementation partner FNTIO, and built SiemensGPT to stay provider-agnostic so that no single model vendor locks it in. AWS describes SiemensGPT as giving vendor-agnostic access to multiple large language models plus tools for building and sharing AI agents.

One data layer under the ONE Tech Company program

Siemens' ONE Tech Company program, presented in Nov 2025, is rebuilding the company around one ERP system, one CRM system and one data layer to power AI, plus one software engineering system for code sharing and one Industrial Foundation Model. Peter Koerte's fiscal 2025 results, as listed in the FY2025 compensation report, included a share-unless principle for data exchange across Siemens and setting up the Data & AI unit.

Own factories first

Siemens tests industrial AI in its own plants before selling it. Siemens calls its Erlangen electronics factory a living lab, where Siemens and NVIDIA co-developed and tested AI applications in live production during 2026, and Siemens acted as customer zero for an embodied-AI robot pilot there (May 2026). Siemens' Nanjing plant runs more than 50 AI applications, and a new Amberg factory planned for 2030 is to be partly controlled by AI.

Partners for each layer

Siemens builds its industrial AI with partners: Microsoft co-developed the Industrial Copilot in 2023, NVIDIA expanded its partnership with Siemens in Jan 2026 to build an Industrial AI Operating System, Alibaba Cloud works with Siemens on cloud simulation in China (Mar 2026), and Salesforce supplies the agents in Siemens' inbound sales process (Sep 2026). Fortune reported in Jul 2025 that Siemens' AI partners also include AWS, European AI companies and Chinese model makers.

Deployment model
Siemens runs AI through central teams and inside its businesses. A Data & Artificial Intelligence unit, led since Jul 1, 2025 by Executive Vice President Vasi Philomin and part of Managing Board member Peter Koerte's portfolio since Oct 1, 2025, drives industrial AI products such as the Eigen Engineering Agent; Siemens' global IT data and AI technology team runs SiemensGPT for employees together with the cybersecurity team; Digital Industries, Smart Infrastructure and Mobility build AI into their own products; and Global Business Services applies AI to HR, finance and procurement processes. Siemens uses its own factories, above all the Electronics Factory in Erlangen, as the first site for AI it later sells to customers.
Model providers
Siemens built SiemensGPT to avoid dependence on any one model provider: implementation partner FNTIO says the aim was to give every employee models such as Claude, GPT and Gemini, lists Anthropic, OpenAI and Meta's Llama in the platform's stack and counts about 50 models available (Mar 2026). Siemens software developers use AI coding assistants including GitHub Copilot (Jul 2025), and Siemens CIO Hanna Hennig listed Microsoft 365 Copilot among the company's everyday AI tools in office IT (Feb 2025). In its products, Siemens built the Industrial Copilot with Microsoft on Azure OpenAI Service (Oct 2023), is integrating NVIDIA NIM and Nemotron models into its chip design software (Jan 2026), and is exploring Alibaba's Qwen models for its product lifecycle management software in China (Mar 2026).
Data and infrastructure
Siemens runs SiemensGPT on AWS and built the Siemens Data Cloud, which FNTIO describes as a platform spanning 1,500 AWS accounts for the whole Siemens AI landscape; SiemensGPT users authenticate through Siemens' central identity provider and Amazon Verified Permissions makes every authorization decision, more than 590 million a month (AWS case study). Siemens' Industrial Copilot runs on Microsoft's Azure OpenAI Service (Oct 2023), its inbound sales agents run on Salesforce's Agentforce platform (Sep 2026), Siemens plans to validate cloud simulation services on Alibaba Cloud for customers in China (Mar 2026), and the AI applications Siemens and NVIDIA built at Erlangen use NVIDIA Cosmos world models, the NVIDIA Factory Operations Blueprint and Omniverse libraries (Oct 2026). Siemens says its technology generates more than 1 trillion data points a day, and has not said whether any of its internal AI runs in its own data centers.

Adoption

Siemens spread AI in layers: applied AI in products and factories, which Siemens says goes back more than 50 years, an employee generative AI platform, SiemensGPT, in use by Oct 2024, coding assistants for its software developers, and agents in shared services and sales in 2025 and 2026. SiemensGPT had 120,000 users according to implementation partner FNTIO (Mar 2026) and 150,000 registered users, 80,000 of them active each month, according to an AWS case study updated in Oct 2026. Siemens Global Business Services is rolling out a four-week AI program for more than 1,000 leaders and a six-week course for more than 10,000 employees, which it also offers to other Siemens units. Peter Koerte said in Mar 2026 that Siemens teams were testing task-specific agents on an internal platform he called an AI factory, and Siemens built AI into all of its vocational training in Sep 2026.

Economics & controls

Spend and ROI

Technology and R&D budget

Siemens spent €6.6 billion on R&D in fiscal 2025, 8.3% of revenue, with €2.9 billion in Digital Industries, €2.0 billion at Siemens Healthineers, €0.9 billion in Smart Infrastructure and €0.4 billion in Mobility, and expects fiscal 2026 R&D intensity slightly above fiscal 2025 (Aug 2026). Siemens spent about €14 billion on the software companies Altair and Dotmatics in fiscal 2025. Siemens does not publish a separate IT or AI budget.

What AI itself costs

Siemens said on Nov 13, 2025 that it will invest more than €1 billion over the following three years to scale its AI offerings, and tied the Eigen Engineering Agent launch to that investment in Apr 2026. Siemens has not disclosed what SiemensGPT, its model usage or its coding assistants cost to run.

Reported ROI

Siemens has not reported a financial return credited to its internal AI use. Peter Koerte told Fortune in Jul 2025 that Siemens has AI “pretty much everywhere” and that the question is how much it has saved, which Fortune reported was not yet resolved; Siemens hopes AI will double its pre-AI annual productivity target of 3% to 4%. Koerte told AIM in Mar 2026 that AI is almost embedded in everything Siemens sells, which makes AI revenue hard to isolate. Siemens' FY2025 report lists AI among opportunities for internal productivity and cost gains without a figure.

Productivity markers

Peter Koerte put the productivity lift from AI coding assistants for Siemens' software developers at 10% to 30% (Jul 2025). Siemens' Nanjing factory reported productivity up 14% by 2024 against 2022 and lead times down 78%, results Siemens attributes to its whole digital program, including more than 50 AI applications, rather than to AI alone (Jan 2026). Siemens said its Erlangen factory raises productivity about 7% a year, which its Oct 2026 fact sheet credits to intelligent automation and digitalization rather than to AI alone, and described the new Erlangen AI tools' cost savings of up to 20% as potential (Oct 2026).

Headcount and skills

Siemens employed about 317,000 people on Jun 30, 2026, Siemens Healthineers included, against about 318,000 on Sep 30, 2025, and has not linked headcount changes to AI in the sources reviewed; Siemens plans a shareholder vote in Feb 2027 on spinning off its Siemens Healthineers shares. Siemens invested about €135 million in professional training in fiscal 2025, and its Managing Board briefed the Supervisory Board in Sep 2025 on a Skills for Life workforce strategy with AI and data capabilities among its key topics.

Governance and risk

AI Governance Framework

Siemens runs a Managing Board-governed AI Governance Framework for the company outside Siemens Healthineers, with Responsible AI principles on data governance, accountability, transparency, human oversight, security, accuracy and ethical use, and with EU AI Act requirements built in. Siemens implements the framework through Generative AI Guardrails tied to its Business Conduct Guidelines and to product lifecycle and risk processes, uses centralized AI platforms with embedded security and compliance checks, and subjects the framework to internal audits (FY2025 report).

Board oversight

Siemens' Supervisory Board turned its Innovation and Finance Committee into an Innovation and Technology Committee on Oct 1, 2025, with a remit covering AI, data strategy and cybersecurity. The Supervisory Board discussed AI, Siemens' data strategy and the use of AI to optimize internal processes at a 2025 meeting, according to its FY2025 report.

Access control on SiemensGPT

Siemens authenticates every SiemensGPT request against its central identity provider and keeps authorization policies as code in Amazon Verified Permissions, which handles more than 590 million authorization calls a month with audit logs and least-privilege access. Siemens plans to extend the pattern to agents that act on behalf of users, according to the AWS case study.

Customer data in AI products

Siemens and Microsoft said at the Industrial Copilot launch in Oct 2023 that customers keep control of their data and that it is not used to train the underlying models. Siemens' Intelligence Center X, launched in Jun 2026, applies security down to the attribute level when it connects industrial data to AI agents.

Controls inside functions

Siemens' communications function has a dedicated generative AI team that writes guidelines, develops and verifies bots, and works with legal and IT before tools reach staff (Apr 2026). Siemens also uses AI-based anomaly detection to find security breaches in its own networks (FY2025 report).

Quick answers

How does Siemens deploy AI?
Siemens deploys AI on two tracks: SiemensGPT, an employee platform built on AWS with models from several providers, and industrial AI products such as the Industrial Copilot and the Eigen Engineering Agent, tested first in its own factories. An AWS case study counted 80,000 monthly SiemensGPT users in Oct 2026, a figure Siemens has not published itself. Managing Board member Peter Koerte owns Data and AI, and Siemens committed more than €1 billion over three years to AI offerings but has reported no business return it credits to AI.
What does Siemens use AI for?
Siemens had 460 AI use cases in production in Jul 2025, according to Fortune, not including more than 15,000 bots employees had built in SiemensGPT, and runs AI in its own factories, shared services, sales, communications and software development as well as in products such as the Industrial Copilot and the Eigen Engineering Agent. Siemens has not published a business return credited to AI for any internal use case: the factory gains it reports for Nanjing and Erlangen come from broader digital programs or are stated as potential, and the efficiency figures for its AI products are customer results. Peter Koerte said in Jul 2025 that the open question is how much Siemens has saved, and that Siemens hopes AI will double its 3% to 4% annual productivity target.
Who leads AI at Siemens?
AI at Siemens is led by Peter Koerte (Managing Board member responsible for Data and AI, Strategy, Siemens Advanta and Siemens Xcelerator; President Smart Infrastructure); Vasi Philomin (Executive Vice President and Head of Data and AI); Hanna Hennig (Chief Information Officer). Ownership of AI on the org chart: Peter Koerte, Managing Board member for Data & AI; EVP Vasi Philomin heads the Data & AI unit.
What AI platform does Siemens use?
SiemensGPT, an internal platform Siemens built on AWS with implementation partner FNTIO, gives employees vendor-agnostic access to large language models and a no-code builder for bots and agents (AWS case study, Oct 2026).
Which AI models does Siemens use?
SiemensGPT offers models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Meta among about 50 (FNTIO, Mar 2026); Siemens built its Industrial Copilot on Microsoft's Azure OpenAI Service (Oct 2023) and said in Jan 2026 it will add NVIDIA Nemotron models to its chip design software.
How many Siemens employees use AI?
SiemensGPT had 150,000 registered users, 80,000 of them active each month (AWS, Oct 2026), against about 317,000 Siemens employees, Siemens Healthineers included (Jun 2026).
How far has AI spread at Siemens?

Open questions

  • How many Siemens employees use SiemensGPT each week by Siemens' own count, given that the 150,000 registered users (AWS) and 120,000 users (FNTIO) come from partner case studies, and how do they compare with the Siemens workforce outside Siemens Healthineers?
  • What financial return has Siemens measured from internal AI, given that Peter Koerte called the amount saved the open question in Jul 2025?
  • Is Siemens on track to double its 3% to 4% annual productivity target with AI, and how does it measure AI's share of that gain?
  • What business return do Siemens' deployed internal tools deliver, such as SiemensGPT, the coding assistants, ServicePilot, cash collection AI and the Agentforce lead process?
  • How much of the €1 billion AI investment goes to internal tools rather than products, and what do SiemensGPT and its model usage cost?
  • Which models carry most SiemensGPT traffic, does any internal AI besides Microsoft 365 Copilot run on Microsoft Azure or in Siemens' own data centers, and is any model fine-tuned on Siemens data?
  • Who holds Siemens' Chief Technology Officer title after Peter Koerte's ended in Sep 2026, is Hanna Hennig still Chief Information Officer, and does the Data & AI unit still report through Koerte now that he also runs Smart Infrastructure?
  • How many AI use cases does Siemens run in production today, given that the most recent public figure, 460, dates from Jul 2025?
  • What returns do Siemens' own factories credit to AI alone, as opposed to the broader digital programs behind the Nanjing and Erlangen results?
  • Does Siemens use the Eigen Engineering Agent and Industrial Copilot in its own automation engineering, and with what result?
