Key findings
Boeing unveiled Boeing Conversational AI, its first large-scale generative AI platform, in 2023 and reached more than 170,000 employees by late 2023, but Abhi Seth put active users at 22,000 in a CDO Magazine interview dated Nov 2024, the last usage figure Boeing has given.
Boeing said in Dec 2025 that it runs more than 70 generative AI applications, including Code Assistant for software engineers and the AskBoeing virtual assistant, and that its GenAI Academy had trained 8,000 employees and certified 2,600 super users who build AI solutions.
Dana Deasy, a former U.S. Department of Defense and JPMorgan Chase CIO, has been Boeing's chief information digital officer since Dec 31, 2024, reports to CEO Kelly Ortberg and leads IT, enterprise data analytics and AI, while Vishwa Uddanwadiker, chief AI and autonomy officer, reports to the CTO (Mar 2026) and Abhi Seth is chief AI and data officer (Dec 2025).
Boeing buys platforms for specific businesses: Boeing Defense, Space & Security chose Palantir's Foundry for its factories and Palantir's AI for classified programs in Sep 2025, and Boeing Global Services introduced Dataliner, an airline data platform built with Microsoft Azure AI Foundry, on Oct 20, 2026.
Boeing agreed in Aug 2026 to sell its Wisk Aero, Insitu and SkyGrid autonomy subsidiaries to Archer Aviation for 19.75% of Archer's Class A shares plus warrants to buy up to $200 million more, keeping access to Wisk's core autonomous flight technology; Boeing expects the deal to close later in 2026.
Where Boeing sits
- Stage
- Piloting
Boeing has reported no business return it credits to AI, for any use case or at the firm level: its 2025 Form 10-K and its Jan and Oct 2026 earnings calls give no AI figure, and its closest measures, more than 17 fewer inspection hours per airplane and office co-pilots that can save up to two hours a day (Dec 2025), are task speedups not stated in cost or output. Boeing has reported a company-wide rollout: Abhi Seth, chief AI and data officer, put active users of the generative AI platform deployed company-wide in 2023 at 22,000 of more than 170,000 reached (CDO Magazine, Nov 2024), and CIDO Dana Deasy, who reports to the CEO, owns IT, data and AI. Boeing is therefore at Piloting; AI-credited returns in two or more functions, or a firm-level AI figure, would move it to Scaling.

How they deploy
One central AI framework with two halves
Boeing restructured its AI work into one centralized framework split into two areas, one to enable Boeing's business and the other to enable its products and customer experiences, according to a Dec 2025 Boeing article. Abhi Seth, chief AI and data officer, and Vishwa Uddanwadiker, whom the article titled chief AI officer, lead the effort, under a stated principle that technology should enhance human capability, not replace it. Boeing's Mar 2026 biography of Uddanwadiker titles him chief artificial intelligence and autonomy officer for Engineering, Test & Technology, reporting to the chief technology officer.
A platform for every employee
Boeing developed Boeing Conversational AI and launched it across the company as a secure interface for employees to query company data, and Abhi Seth said it was designed so staff need not be data scientists to use it. Seth told CDO Magazine in Nov 2024 that the platform lets domain experts test generative AI on their own problems without coding, and that Boeing moved innovation from year-long cycles to 12-week sprints. Kelly Ortberg told Bloomberg Television in Jul 2026 that Boeing uses AI to improve back-office processes and software and hardware design, and plans to build AI into its services and products.
Buy platforms for business units
Boeing's businesses add outside platforms for specific jobs. Boeing Defense, Space & Security chose Palantir's Foundry in Sep 2025 to standardize data analytics across more than a dozen major production lines and tapped Palantir for AI on classified programs; Boeing Global Services introduced Dataliner, built with Microsoft, in Oct 2026; and Boeing Global Services is evaluating Pelico's orchestration software, including initial agentic workflows, for C-17 depot maintenance (Jul 2026).
Keep the autonomy technology, sell the companies
Boeing agreed in Aug 2026 to sell Wisk Aero, Insitu and SkyGrid to Archer Aviation for a stake in Archer, retaining access to Wisk's core autonomous flight technology for current and next-generation commercial and defense aircraft. Kelly Ortberg said on Sep 16, 2026 that the autonomy technology was a key thing Boeing wanted from its Wisk investment, that Boeing will have a seat on Archer's board, and that the sale spares Boeing a large capital outlay. CTO Lane Ballard listed artificial intelligence and autonomy among Boeing's eight technology priorities in Apr 2026, naming computer vision, reinforcement learning, embedded machine learning and generative AI.
Retain the data services after the Jeppesen sale
Boeing closed the $10.55 billion sale of Jeppesen, ForeFlight, AerData and OzRunways to Thoma Bravo on Nov 3, 2025, keeping a Digital Services portfolio that uses aircraft and fleet data for maintenance, diagnostics and repair. Boeing introduced Dataliner in Oct 2026 as the common intelligence foundation for that portfolio.
- Deployment model
- Boeing runs enterprise AI from Information Digital Technology & Security (IDT&S), the organization CIDO Dana Deasy leads with responsibility for IT, enterprise data analytics, AI and security. A Dec 2025 Boeing story describes a Boeing AI team working with IDT&S and the Boeing Korea Engineering & Technology Center to build an AI part-validation tool for factory inspectors. Engineering and product AI sit under the chief technology officer: Vishwa Uddanwadiker, chief AI and autonomy officer for Engineering, Test & Technology, reports to CTO Lane Ballard and oversees AI research, inventions, regulator engagement and an autonomy mission across programs (Mar 2026). The business units run their own AI and autonomy work: Phantom Works and Boeing Defence Australia for MQ-28 mission autonomy, Space Mission Systems for onboard spacecraft AI, and Boeing Global Services for Dataliner and maintenance planning.
- Model providers
- Boeing has not named the large language models behind Boeing Conversational AI or its more than 70 generative AI applications. Boeing's Mar 2026 biography of Vishwa Uddanwadiker says that, as generative AI chief engineer, he ran an integrated product team training large language models with Boeing data. Dataliner, introduced Oct 20, 2026, is built in partnership with Microsoft on Azure AI Foundry and Microsoft's data solutions, among other technologies. Boeing Defense, Space & Security uses Palantir's Foundry platform across its factories and Palantir's AI expertise on classified programs (Sep 2025). Boeing research teams adapt open models: Space Mission Systems prototyped a lightweight open model tuned for low power on space-grade hardware (Jan 2026), and the Boeing Korea Engineering & Technology Center evaluated open-source speech architectures and adapted a model for offline cabin captions (Sep 2025).
- Data and infrastructure
- Boeing says its AI architecture is designed so no proprietary or regulated information leaves its secure network, with models trained to hold back when data is lacking and responses traced to trusted sources (Dec 2025). Abhi Seth described unified storage such as lakehouses for quality and supply chain data, key master data assets with assigned stewards, and access control by user role because some defense data is restricted to U.S. personnel (Nov 2024). Boeing chose Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft as its cloud providers in Apr 2022 to move applications off on-premises servers, but has not named the cloud that hosts Boeing Conversational AI. Dataliner lets airlines keep their data in their own environments while drawing on Boeing intelligence (Oct 2026).

Economics & controls
Spend and ROI
Technology spending
Boeing does not disclose a technology or IT budget. Boeing's research and development expense was $3.6 billion in 2025, down from $3.8 billion in 2024, and covers product development such as new airplanes, not AI alone (2025 Form 10-K).
What AI itself costs
Boeing has not disclosed what it spends on AI, on Boeing Conversational AI or on its Palantir and Microsoft contracts. The largest AI-related transaction on record is a divestiture: Boeing is selling Wisk Aero, Insitu and SkyGrid to Archer Aviation for 19.75% of Archer's Class A shares and two warrants for up to $200 million more, and held $688 million of their assets and $161 million of liabilities for sale at Sep 30, 2026. Kelly Ortberg said on Sep 16, 2026 that the sale spares Boeing a large capital investment to take Wisk's aircraft to market.
Reported ROI
Boeing has published no business-level return credited to AI, at the firm level or for any use case. Boeing's Dec 2025 account of its AI program describes predictive maintenance that cuts downtime, machine learning and computer vision that reduce defects, and office AI co-pilots that can save employees up to two hours a day, without cost, revenue or headcount figures. Kelly Ortberg and CFO Jay Malave did not mention AI on the Jan 27, 2026 or Oct 27, 2026 earnings calls or at the Sep 16, 2026 Morgan Stanley conference, and Ortberg's Jul 2026 Bloomberg Television remarks on AI carried no figures.
Productivity markers
Boeing said in Dec 2025 that its AI part-validation tool improved inspection time by more than 17 hours per airplane, after more than 70% of 737 part serial numbers had been entered by hand, and that the team delivered a prototype ready for on-site testing in eight months. Boeing also says AskBoeing can handle thousands of support requests a day and that Code Assistant breaks days of software work down to moments.
Headcount
Boeing's workforce was about 182,000 at Dec 31, 2025, with 14% outside the U.S. and about 72,000 union members (2025 Form 10-K). Boeing has not linked headcount to AI in its 2025 Form 10-K or its Jan and Oct 2026 earnings calls, and its Dec 2025 AI article states that technology should enhance human capability, not replace it.
Governance and risk
AI principles and framework
Boeing says every AI initiative runs under a governance and ethics framework built on five principles: safety, reliability, explainability, privacy and human oversight. Boeing's models are trained to hold back when data is lacking instead of guessing, and its AI systems trace each response to a trusted source (Dec 2025).
Data boundary
Boeing applies an architecture designed so no proprietary or regulated information leaves its secure network (Dec 2025). Abhi Seth said in Nov 2024 that Boeing's AI governance covers data visibility and usage rules, data labeling, access control and user roles, partly because some defense data is restricted to U.S. personnel. Dataliner lets airlines keep their data in their own environments and control what they share (Oct 2026).
Board oversight
Boeing's board oversees cybersecurity risk, including risks from artificial intelligence, and held focused briefings on AI in 2025, according to the Mar 2026 proxy statement; directors also attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Artificial Intelligence Conference. The Audit Committee reviews cybersecurity, with Dana Deasy and Chief Security Officer Terry Rice presenting at each of its bimonthly meetings (2025 Form 10-K).
Disclosed risks
Boeing's 2025 Form 10-K mentions artificial intelligence once, as one of the emerging technologies that make cyberattack techniques evolve rapidly. Terry Rice chairs Boeing's Global Security Governance Council, which sets enterprise cybersecurity policy and strategy.
Autonomy and certification
Vishwa Uddanwadiker said in Dec 2025 that Boeing works with regulators, including EASA, on certification pathways and with U.S. government partners on assured autonomy, so that highly automated systems scale under human oversight; his Mar 2026 Boeing biography lists regulator engagement among his duties. Boeing's spacecraft AI prototype may take only limited, tested actions under defined safety rules (Jan 2026), and Boeing plans to study agentic AI that performs tasks autonomously under human supervision (Dec 2025).

Quick answers
- How does Boeing deploy AI?
- Boeing deploys AI through Boeing Conversational AI, a generative AI platform rolled out company-wide in 2023 that reached more than 170,000 employees, and more than 70 generative AI applications such as Code Assistant and AskBoeing (Dec 2025). Chief Information Digital Officer Dana Deasy owns enterprise IT, data and AI, a chief AI and autonomy officer under the CTO leads product AI, and the businesses add Palantir Foundry in defense factories and Dataliner, built on Microsoft Azure AI Foundry. Boeing has published no AI spending or AI-credited financial return.
- What does Boeing use AI for?
- Boeing reported more than 70 generative AI applications in Dec 2025, from Code Assistant and the AskBoeing virtual assistant to computer vision on factory drawings and an AI part-validation tool on the Renton and Everett production lines, alongside AI and autonomy in products such as the MQ-28 Ghost Bat and the Dataliner airline data platform. Boeing has published no business-level return for any of these use cases and gives no firm-level figure for AI's financial effect; its closest measures, more than 17 fewer inspection hours per airplane and office AI co-pilots that can save up to two hours a day, are not stated in cost or output terms.
- Who leads AI at Boeing?
- AI at Boeing is led by Dana Deasy (Chief Information Digital Officer and SVP, Information Digital Technology & Security); Abhi Seth (Chief AI and Data Officer); Vishwa Uddanwadiker (VP and Chief Artificial Intelligence & Autonomy Officer, Engineering, Test & Technology). Ownership of AI on the org chart: CIDO Dana Deasy, reporting to the CEO; chief AI and autonomy officer under the CTO.
- What AI platform does Boeing use?
- Boeing Conversational AI, unveiled in 2023 as Boeing's first large-scale generative AI platform, lets employees query company data inside Boeing's network; Boeing ran more than 70 generative AI applications by Dec 2025.
- Which AI models does Boeing use?
- Boeing has not named the models behind Boeing Conversational AI; Dataliner runs on Microsoft Azure AI Foundry, defense factories use Palantir Foundry, a Boeing team trained large language models on Boeing data, and research teams adapt open models (Jan 2026).
- How many Boeing employees use AI?
- Boeing Conversational AI reached more than 170,000 Boeing employees by late 2023, with 22,000 active users in Nov 2024, the latest figure; the GenAI Academy had trained 8,000 employees by Dec 2025.
- How far has AI spread at Boeing?
- Boeing has reported no business return it credits to AI, for any use case or at the firm level: its 2025 Form 10-K and its Jan and Oct 2026 earnings calls give no AI figure, and its closest measures, more than 17 fewer inspection hours per airplane and office co-pilots that can save up to two hours a day (Dec 2025), are task speedups not stated in cost or output.
