Their approach to AI

The platform
Lowe's built an AI platform with reusable components on an omnichannel data network designed to work across leading large language models (Seemantini Godbole, Dec 2024), and runs AI on Dell servers with NVIDIA GPUs in its data centers and in micro data centers in its stores (Dell, Oct 2025).
The models
Lowe's built Mylow and Mylow Companion on OpenAI models, which NVIDIA says Lowe's fine-tunes on its own data, and said in Jan 2026 it is adding Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise for Customer Experience to Mylow; Lowe's also ran about 50 AI models for search, recommendations, sourcing, demand planning and pricing (Dec 2024).
The reach
Mylow Companion has been on store associates' handheld devices in all 1,700-plus Lowe's stores since May 2025, associates had asked it more than 5 million questions by May 2026, and customers sent Mylow more than 1 million questions a month.
The catch
Lowe's credits AI with one business return, double-digit productivity gains for its engineers, and otherwise reports conversion and customer satisfaction rather than dollars; as of Nov 2026 Lowe's had not disclosed what AI costs or where the OpenAI models behind Mylow run.

Key findings

  1. Lowe's Mylow and Mylow Companion, both built with OpenAI, had answered more than 25 million questions from customers and associates by Aug 19, 2026, and together took roughly 2 million questions a month in May 2026.

  2. Lowe's put Mylow Companion on store associates' handheld devices in all of its more than 1,700 stores on May 5, 2025, and associates had asked it more than 5 million questions by May 2026, as Lowe's added Spanish and new voice features.

  3. Lowe's named Seemantini Godbole Executive Vice President, Chief Information and AI Officer effective Sep 1, 2026, weeks after Chandhu Nair, its SVP of stores, data, AI and innovation, was named Target's first chief AI officer (Aug 11, 2026); Godbole has run Lowe's technology since 2018 and reports to CEO Marvin Ellison.

  4. Lowe's credits AI with one business return, double-digit productivity gains for its engineers using AI coding and code review tools (Feb and May 2026), and otherwise reports operating measures: online customers who use Mylow convert at three times the rate of those who do not (May and Aug 2026), and customer satisfaction rises about 200 basis points when associates use Mylow Companion. Lowe's has published no dollar return for AI.

  5. Lowe's runs Mylow on OpenAI models and said in Jan 2026 it is adding Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise, is building a digital replica of its supply chain with Palantir and NVIDIA (Oct 2025), and runs AI on Dell servers with NVIDIA GPUs in its data centers and stores (Oct 2025).

Where Lowe's sits

Stage
Piloting

Lowe's has reported one business return it credits to AI, which places it in Piloting: Marvin Ellison said on the Feb and May 2026 earnings calls that Lowe's tech team has made double-digit productivity gains using AI tools for software development and code review. Lowe's has published no firm-level figure for AI's financial effect and does not say how much of its roughly $1 billion a year productivity program comes from AI. Lowe's put Mylow Companion on associates' handheld devices in all 1,700-plus stores in May 2025, and associates had asked it more than 5 million questions by May 2026, but Lowe's has not said how many of its about 276,000 associates use it or any other AI tool; Seemantini Godbole owns AI as Chief Information and AI Officer, reporting to the CEO. Lowe's falls short of Scaling because no second function has a return credited to AI: Mylow's threefold conversion among customers who use it and the 200 basis point customer satisfaction gain with Mylow Companion are operating measures, not business returns.

How they deploy

One framework: how Lowe's sells, shops and works

Seemantini Godbole told investors in Dec 2024 that Lowe's had put in place a framework for generative AI built around three areas, how Lowe's sells, how customers shop and how the company works, with a standard development process and one set of criteria for deciding where to use AI. Marvin Ellison has used the same framework on the Nov 2025, Feb 2026 and May 2026 earnings calls, and the 2025 Form 10-K describes it alongside Lowe's use of internally and third-party developed predictive and generative AI.

Data built for any large language model

Lowe's spent 2018 to 2024 rebuilding its technology around one omnichannel network for items, prices, promotions, inventory, customers and orders, and Seemantini Godbole said in Dec 2024 that Lowe's organized that data so AI can read it and so Lowe's can work across leading large language models, picking the platform by use case. Godbole said Lowe's built an AI platform with reusable components and creates solutions alongside NVIDIA, OpenAI and Palantir, and Lowe's runs AI on Dell servers with NVIDIA GPUs in its data centers and stores.

One assistant for customers and associates

Lowe's built Mylow for customers and Mylow Companion for store associates on the same OpenAI-based foundation, launched two months apart in 2025. Marvin Ellison said in Nov 2025 that every interaction with the assistants feeds Lowe's proprietary models, and in May 2026 that building Mylow and Mylow Companion taught Lowe's about the power of agentic commerce. Seemantini Godbole said in Jan 2026 that Lowe's is enhancing Mylow with Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise for Customer Experience to tailor guidance to a customer's home, project and location.

AI inside the productivity program

Lowe's Perpetual Productivity Improvement program targets about $1 billion of productivity a year, and Lowe's places Mylow Companion and AI shelf replenishment inside it. Marvin Ellison said in May 2026 that AI will create productivity as Lowe's redesigns jobs and what AI agents can do independent of positions, while also making existing associates more effective in their current jobs.

Agentic commerce next

Marvin Ellison said in Nov 2025 that Lowe's AI roadmap includes taking part in agentic commerce, where AI agents shop on customers' behalf, and in Feb 2026 that Lowe's is collaborating with leading digital platforms to be ready for it, without naming them. Google Cloud said in Jan 2026 that Lowe's will use the agentic capabilities of Gemini Enterprise for Customer Experience, whose shopping agent can add items to a cart and check out with the customer's consent.

Deployment model
Lowe's runs AI from a central technology organization under Seemantini Godbole, whose remit covers engineering, product roadmaps, AI, data and analytics, information security and innovation, and business leaders roll the tools out in their areas: stores (Mylow Companion), Pro sales (Pro Companion, Material Lists), merchandising (AI tools for merchants in 2026) and supply chain (AI inventory planning, replenishment and a supply chain model with Palantir and NVIDIA). Lowe's India in Bengaluru, led by CTO Ankur Mittal, houses India-based AI and data analytics teams, and Neelima Sharma's customer and commerce technology teams build Lowe's AI-enabled and agentic customer tools. Chandhu Nair led stores, data, AI and innovation as an SVP until he left to become Target's chief AI officer in Aug 2026, and no successor appeared on Lowe's leadership pages by Nov 2026. An AI Governance Committee of business, technology and support leaders approves changes to Lowe's AI governance framework.
Model providers
Lowe's built Mylow in collaboration with OpenAI and launched it in Mar 2025, and Mylow Companion runs on the same foundation; Marvin Ellison describes both as built on an OpenAI platform (Feb 2026), and OpenAI gave Lowe's its 100 billion token milestone award in Nov 2025. NVIDIA's case study on Lowe's says Mylow combines OpenAI commercial models fine-tuned on Lowe's proprietary data with retrieval-augmented generation and NVIDIA NeMo Guardrails; Lowe's has not named the OpenAI models it uses. Lowe's said in Jan 2026 it is enhancing Mylow with Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise for Customer Experience. Seemantini Godbole said in Dec 2024 that Lowe's data network lets it work across leading large language models and that Lowe's runs about 50 AI models for search, recommendations, sourcing, demand planning and pricing. Lowe's uses NVIDIA in Nudge at self-checkout and NVIDIA DeepStream for in-store computer vision, is building a supply chain model with Palantir and NVIDIA (Oct 2025), and gained AI blueprint takeoff technology with its Oct 2025 acquisition of Foundation Building Materials.
Data and infrastructure
Lowe's omnichannel network, rebuilt from 2018 to 2024, holds product information, inventory locations, prices, promotions and customer orders across every channel, and Seemantini Godbole said in Dec 2024 that Lowe's built it with AI in mind. Lowe's runs AI on Dell PowerEdge servers with NVIDIA GPUs, with GPUs in its data centers for training and micro data centers in its stores for low-latency inference, and Godbole said Lowe's has integrated AI at the edge and in its data centers (Dell case study, Oct 2025); Dell puts the micro data centers in every store, while NVIDIA's case study says hundreds of stores. Lowe's has not said where the OpenAI models behind Mylow run, Google Cloud supplies Gemini Enterprise for Customer Experience for Mylow (Jan 2026), and NVIDIA says Lowe's streams its Omniverse store digital twins from the cloud without naming a provider. Lowe's 2025 Form 10-K says Lowe's operates data centers and is modernizing its distribution, replenishment, accounting and finance systems.

Use cases

Lowe's has not given a count of its AI use cases; it named about 50 AI models in Dec 2024 for search, recommendations, sourcing, demand planning and pricing, and has since added generative assistants for customers and associates, AI tools for Pro sales and quoting, AI shelf replenishment, in-store computer vision and a supply chain model with Palantir and NVIDIA. Lowe's has published a business-level return for one use case: double-digit productivity gains for engineers using AI development and code review tools (Nov 2025, repeated May 2026). Lowe's reports Mylow's effect as online conversion three times higher among customers who use it and Mylow Companion's as customer satisfaction up about 200 basis points, and has put no dollar figure on AI's firm-level return.

Adoption

Lowe's spread AI in layers: predictive models in search, recommendations, sourcing, demand planning and pricing (about 50 by Dec 2024), then generative assistants from 2025. Mylow Companion went from a store pilot in Dec 2024 to every store in May 2025, its adoption beat Lowe's targets by Aug 2025, and associates had asked it more than 5 million questions by May 2026, while customers sent Mylow more than 1 million questions a month; the two assistants passed 25 million questions by Aug 2026. Dell's Oct 2025 case study says Lowe's had begun scaling AI tools for corporate and supply chain associates, and Lowe's holds an annual AI Day where associates share how they use AI (Aug 2026), but Lowe's has not published how many of its roughly 276,000 associates use AI each week.

Economics & controls

Spend and ROI

Technology budget

Lowe's does not disclose a technology budget. Lowe's capital expenditures were $2.2 billion in fiscal 2025, with up to $2.5 billion planned for fiscal 2026, and Brandon Sink said first-quarter 2026 capital spending of $521 million included tech-driven productivity efforts and key AI initiatives. Lowe's 2025 Form 10-K says Lowe's anticipates increased investment in AI.

What AI itself costs

Lowe's has not disclosed what it spends on AI models, tokens, servers or AI staff. The 100 billion token milestone award OpenAI gave Lowe's in Nov 2025 indicates the volume running through OpenAI's models, not its cost.

Reported ROI

Lowe's has published no dollar return for AI. The one business-level figure Lowe's credits to AI is double-digit productivity gains for engineers using AI development and code review tools, which Marvin Ellison reported in Nov 2025 and repeated in Feb and May 2026. Lowe's otherwise reports operating measures: online customers who engage with Mylow convert at more than double the rate of others (Nov 2025) and at three times the rate (May and Aug 2026), and customer satisfaction rises about 200 basis points when associates use Mylow Companion. Lowe's online sales grew 15.7% in the second quarter of 2026, which Lowe's credits to its digital investments as a whole, not to Mylow alone.

Productivity program

Lowe's Perpetual Productivity Improvement program delivered about $1 billion of productivity in 2025 and targets about $1 billion again in 2026, split roughly evenly between gross margin and expenses, according to Brandon Sink (Feb 2026). Lowe's counts AI-enabled tools such as Mylow Companion and full shelf replenishment among its productivity initiatives, and Sink said in May 2026 that AI work in demand planning, replenishment, pricing and assortment makes up a growing part of the $1 billion, but Lowe's has not said how much of it comes from AI.

Headcount

Lowe's employed about 167,000 full-time and 109,000 part-time associates at Jan 30, 2026. Lowe's announced the elimination of about 600 corporate and support roles before its Feb 25, 2026 earnings call as part of its productivity program, without attributing the cuts to AI. Marvin Ellison said in May 2026 that AI will create productivity as Lowe's redesigns jobs and what AI agents can do independent of positions.

Governance and risk

AI Governance Committee

Lowe's established an AI Governance Committee of leaders across business, technology and support functions that oversees and approves enhancements to its AI governance framework, and developed an AI cybersecurity strategy for building secure and reliable AI systems while managing ethical, legal, cyber, data privacy and other technology risks (2025 Form 10-K, 2026 proxy statement).

Board oversight

Lowe's 2026 proxy statement, dated Apr 16, 2026, gives the board's Technology Committee oversight of risks from significant emerging technologies like AI, along with strategic, operational and investment oversight, and says the full board receives periodic updates on Lowe's AI strategies. Lowe's 2025 Form 10-K, filed in Mar 2026, described the Audit Committee as primarily responsible for emerging technology risk.

Guardrails on the assistants

Joseph McFarland said in Dec 2024 that Lowe's store companion app has guardrails, answering from Lowe's own products and policies instead of open web search, and lets associates rate each answer so the system improves. NVIDIA's case study on Lowe's says Mylow uses NVIDIA NeMo Guardrails and retrieval-augmented generation over Lowe's product and inventory data.

Security reporting

Lowe's Chief Information Security Officer, Marc Varner, reports to Seemantini Godbole, who reports to the CEO, and Godbole or Varner gives written cybersecurity reports and presentations at the regular meetings of the board committee that oversees cybersecurity, the Technology Committee in the 2026 proxy statement. Lowe's cybersecurity risks also feed the enterprise risk management program overseen by Chief Legal Officer Juliette Pryor.

Disclosed risks

Lowe's 2025 Form 10-K warns that its growing use of AI and machine learning brings risks from algorithm development, the tools and data sets used and a developing regulatory environment, that pilot programs integrating generative AI into internal and customer-facing systems may intensify cybersecurity risk, and that competitors using AI more effectively could leave Lowe's at a disadvantage.

Quick answers

How does Lowe's deploy AI?
Lowe's deploys AI through Mylow, a customer assistant built with OpenAI and launched in Mar 2025, and Mylow Companion, the same system on associates' handheld devices in every store since May 2025; the two had answered more than 25 million questions by Aug 2026. Lowe's also runs AI models for search, pricing and demand planning, and runs AI on Dell servers with NVIDIA GPUs in its data centers and stores. Seemantini Godbole, Chief Information and AI Officer since Sep 1, 2026, owns AI and reports to CEO Marvin Ellison.
What does Lowe's use AI for?
Who leads AI at Lowe's?
AI at Lowe's is led by Seemantini Godbole (Executive Vice President, Chief Information and AI Officer); Ankur Mittal (SVP, Chief Technology Officer and Managing Director of Lowe's India); Neelima Sharma (SVP, Customer and Commerce Technology). Ownership of AI on the org chart: Seemantini Godbole, EVP Chief Information and AI Officer, reporting to the CEO.
What AI platform does Lowe's use?
Lowe's built an AI platform with reusable components on an omnichannel data network designed to work across leading large language models (Seemantini Godbole, Dec 2024), and runs AI on Dell servers with NVIDIA GPUs in its data centers and in micro data centers in its stores (Dell, Oct 2025).
Which AI models does Lowe's use?
Lowe's built Mylow and Mylow Companion on OpenAI models, which NVIDIA says Lowe's fine-tunes on its own data, and said in Jan 2026 it is adding Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise for Customer Experience to Mylow; Lowe's also ran about 50 AI models for search, recommendations, sourcing, demand planning and pricing (Dec 2024).
How many Lowe's employees use AI?
Mylow Companion has been on store associates' handheld devices in all 1,700-plus Lowe's stores since May 2025, associates had asked it more than 5 million questions by May 2026, and customers sent Mylow more than 1 million questions a month.
How far has AI spread at Lowe's?
