Chipotle Mexican Grill deploys AI as separate tools for hiring, loyalty and the kitchen, not one platform: Ava Cado, a Paradox conversational AI assistant, has handled hiring for its restaurants since Oct 2024, and an AI model picks out lapsed Rewards members for personalized offers. Chipotle put an AI cook-to-needs forecasting tool into a pilot of more than 500 restaurants in Q3 2026, plans a national rollout in early 2027, and has disclosed no AI spending or return credited to AI.

Their approach to AI

The platform
Chipotle Mexican Grill has no named AI platform: Ava Cado runs on Paradox's hiring software, Chipotle has not named the vendor of its 2026 AI cook-to-needs tool, and Chief Digital Officer Arlie Sisson was adding AI and architecture leadership to her team in Oct 2026.
The models
Chipotle has named no model provider; its disclosed AI comes inside vendor products (Paradox for hiring, Miso Robotics and PreciTaste in 2022 kitchen pilots), and its FY2025 Form 10-K warns of hallucination, bias and intellectual property risks.
The reach
Ava Cado has handled hiring conversations in Chipotle's restaurants since Oct 2024, and the AI cook-to-needs pilot reached more than 500 of over 4,200 restaurants by Oct 2026; Chipotle has disclosed no AI assistant for support center staff.
The catch
Chipotle Mexican Grill has reported no business return credited to AI, no AI spending and no count of employees using AI tools, and CEO Scott Boatwright said on Oct 28, 2026 that Chipotle is “still in the early stages of what AI can do.”

Key findings

  1. Chipotle Mexican Grill's most documented AI system is Ava Cado, a Paradox conversational AI hiring assistant rolled out to more than 3,500 restaurants in Oct 2024, which Chipotle said in Feb 2025 cut the average time from application to start from 12 days to four.

  2. Chipotle put an AI cook-to-needs tool, which forecasts demand to recommend how much fresh food to prepare and when, into pilot in Jul 2026 and had it in more than 500 restaurants by Oct 28, 2026, with a national rollout planned for early 2027.

  3. Chipotle made AI part of a Recipe for Growth strategy pillar in Feb 2026, when Scott Boatwright said an AI model identifies lapsed Rewards members for personalized journeys, and by Oct 2026 Chipotle was developing Ava Cado as an in-restaurant AI assistant that could give general managers operational insights and coaching.

  4. Curt Garner, a former Starbucks CIO who joined Chipotle as CIO in 2015, has run technology and digital since then and added strategy and supply chain in Jun 2025 as President, Chief Strategy and Technology Officer; Chief Digital Officer Arlie Sisson, hired from Hyatt in Apr 2026 to report to him, was adding AI and architecture leadership to her team in Oct 2026.

  5. Chipotle has disclosed no AI spending, model provider or business return credited to AI; Scott Boatwright said in Apr 2026 that hours freed by tools such as Ava Cado are reinvested in restaurants rather than cut, and in Oct 2026 that Chipotle is still in the early stages of what AI can do.

Where Chipotle sits

Stage
Experimenting

Chipotle Mexican Grill is at Experimenting because it has reported no business return it credits to AI: its Ava Cado figures, such as the average time from application to start falling from 12 days to four (Feb 2025), measure hiring speed rather than cost or revenue, and the 2026 proxy says AI-enabled Rewards personalization raised guest conversion, frequency and attachment without giving a figure. Chipotle has not reported a company-wide AI rollout with a count of employees using AI tools: Ava Cado has handled hiring in more than 3,500 restaurants since Oct 2024, a restaurant count rather than a user count, and the AI cook-to-needs tool is a pilot in more than 500 of over 4,200 restaurants (Oct 2026). Chipotle would reach Piloting with one return it credits to AI, such as waste or labor savings from the cook-to-needs pilot, or a stated count of employees using its AI tools under a named owner; President Curt Garner owns technology, but Chipotle has not named an owner for the AI part of its Recipe for Growth strategy.

How they deploy

From no mention to a strategy pillar

AI did not come up on Chipotle's Oct 29, 2025 earnings call. On Feb 3, 2026 Scott Boatwright set out a Recipe for Growth strategy whose technology pillar calls for modernizing the business model with technology, including AI, alongside a relaunched Rewards program, and said Chipotle would use its data and AI to make Rewards experiences more personalized. On Jul 29, 2026 Boatwright said a cook-to-needs tool using AI-based demand forecasts had gone live in pilot that month, and by Oct 28, 2026 he described that tool in more than 500 restaurants and Ava Cado being developed as an in-restaurant AI assistant, while saying Chipotle is in the early stages of what AI can do.

AI bought inside vendor products

Chipotle's disclosed AI comes from vendors instead of an in-house platform: Paradox runs the Ava Cado hiring assistant, Miso Robotics built the Chippy tortilla chip robot, and PreciTaste supplied the first cook-to-needs kitchen pilot in 2022; Chipotle has not named the vendor behind its 2026 cook-to-needs tool. Chipotle's FY2025 Form 10-K says many of its critical systems are provided and managed by third parties, and that it invests in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, that may not deliver the expected efficiencies.

A venture fund and stage-gate testing

Chipotle launched its Cultivate Next venture fund in Apr 2022 with $50 million and doubled it to $100 million in Feb 2024, taking early-stage stakes in kitchen automation makers Hyphen and Vebu and in AI companies such as Lumachain, Greenfield Robotics and Benchmark Labs. Chipotle tests each new tool at its Cultivate Center in Irvine, Calif., then in restaurants with crew and guest feedback, before deciding on wider rollouts, a stage-gate process Curt Garner described in Sep 2024 and Scott Boatwright cited for the manager assistant in Apr 2026.

Kitchen equipment and screens ahead of robots

Chipotle's restaurant productivity push in 2026 centers on tools it does not describe as AI: the High Efficiency Equipment Package, a dual-sided plancha, three-pan rice cooker and high-capacity fryer, in more than 1,700 restaurants by Oct 2026, and Chipotle Kitchen, a proprietary digital makeline display live in more than 100 restaurants in Apr 2026 and due to scale systemwide through 2027. Chipotle's FY2024 Form 10-K named the Hyphen makeline and Autocado among the initiatives in its stage-gate process; the FY2025 Form 10-K, filed Feb 2026, mentions Hyphen only as an investment and does not mention Autocado.

A brand at a distance from AI content

Chipotle used AI-generated advertising as a foil on Feb 3, 2026: it said it would skip a TV ad during the Feb 8 football championship game and post free-entrée codes on Instagram when an AI-generated commercial aired, with Stephanie Perdue, then interim Chief Marketing Officer, tying the stunt to Chipotle's lack of artificial ingredients.

Deployment model
Chipotle runs technology centrally under President, Chief Strategy and Technology Officer Curt Garner, who joined as CIO in 2015 and added supply chain in Jun 2025; Chief Digital Officer Arlie Sisson has reported to Garner since Apr 2026 and was adding AI and architecture leadership in Oct 2026, and Scott Boatwright said in Feb 2026 that Chipotle was also hiring a Vice President of Emerging Technologies. Chipotle's AI reaches job candidates, restaurant crews and guests as vendor software (Paradox's Ava Cado, the Pepper chatbot), the cook-to-needs forecasting pilot and AI-driven targeting in Chipotle Rewards, while kitchen robots are co-developed with Cultivate Next portfolio companies. A Sep 2026 Chipotle job posting asks operations analytics hires in Newport Beach, Calif. to apply statistical, machine learning and natural language processing methods.
Model providers
Chipotle has not named a foundation model provider or a large language model it uses. Chipotle's disclosed AI comes inside vendor products: Paradox's conversational AI for hiring (Oct 2024), Miso Robotics' AI for Chippy (Mar 2022) and PreciTaste's AI and machine learning forecasts (Sep 2022); Chipotle has not said who supplies the AI behind its 2026 cook-to-needs tool or its Rewards targeting model. Chipotle's FY2025 Form 10-K lists inaccuracies, hallucinations, bias or discrimination and intellectual property claims among the risks of the artificial intelligence and machine learning it uses.
Data and infrastructure
Chipotle depends on information technology for point of sale, digital ordering, ingredient tracing, supply chain management, the Rewards program, payroll, sales forecasting and business analytics, and its FY2025 Form 10-K says its systems and its partners' systems are cloud-based or hosted on proprietary servers, with many critical systems provided and managed by third parties. Chipotle has not named its cloud providers or said where any AI inference runs. A Chipotle job posting from Oct 2026 asks analytics hires for experience with large cloud data platforms, preferably Snowflake, and a Sep 2026 supply chain posting names Oracle among its supply chain platforms alongside AI, RFID and traceability projects.

Use cases

Chipotle Mexican Grill has named a few AI uses in production: Ava Cado, a Paradox conversational AI hiring assistant in its restaurants since Oct 2024; an AI model that targets lapsed Rewards members (Feb 2026); and the Pepper guest chatbot and machine learning crew scheduling, last described in 2022. Chipotle's AI cook-to-needs forecasting tool is in a pilot of more than 500 restaurants (Oct 2026), an Ava Cado assistant for general managers is in development, and kitchen robots such as Autocado and the Hyphen makeline were last reported in single-restaurant pilots in 2024. Chipotle has reported no business return credited to AI for any of them; its Ava Cado figures, such as the average time from application to start falling from 12 days to four (Feb 2025), measure hiring speed, not cost or revenue.

Adoption

Chipotle Mexican Grill's AI reaches people mainly through tools for candidates, guests and restaurant crews, not an employee assistant: Ava Cado handles hiring conversations for its restaurants (Oct 2024), an AI model targets lapsed members of a Rewards program that had 24 million active members in Q3 2026, and the AI cook-to-needs tool reached more than 500 of over 4,200 restaurants within about three months of going live in pilot in Jul 2026. Chipotle has not disclosed a generative AI tool for its 130,301 employees, 125,408 of whom worked in U.S. restaurants at Dec 31, 2025, or said how many of its 1,708 U.S. support center and field leadership staff use AI. Chipotle's kitchen robots were last reported in single-restaurant pilots in 2024, while non-AI kitchen equipment spread faster: the High Efficiency Equipment Package grew from 350 restaurants in Feb 2026 to more than 1,700 in Oct 2026.

Economics & controls

Spend and ROI

Technology budget

Chipotle Mexican Grill does not disclose a technology budget. Chipotle expected about $834.1 million of capital expenditures in 2026, about $531.8 million of it for new restaurants and about $266.9 million for existing restaurants, including remodels, new equipment and hardware, and technology to optimize efficiencies, with a further portion for corporate technology initiatives (FY2025 Form 10-K). Chipotle's Q3 2026 Form 10-Q says it expects new equipment costs to stay high through 2027, and Adam Rymer said in Apr 2026 that underlying general and administrative costs would rise to about $151 million in Q2 2026, from $142 million in Q1, as Chipotle invests in technology and people.

What AI costs

Chipotle has not disclosed what it spends on AI. Chipotle's disclosed outlays tied to automation and AI ventures are a $100 million Cultivate Next commitment (Feb 2024), a Hyphen stake carried at $31.8 million at Sep 30, 2026, other Cultivate Next holdings carried at $35.5 million at Dec 31, 2025, up from $21.3 million a year earlier, and purchases from Vebu, a related-party automation developer, of $5.6 million in 2025, up from about $1.0 million in 2024.

Reported ROI

Chipotle reports no business-level return credited to AI. The Ava Cado figures Chipotle published in Feb 2025, a fall in the average time from application to start from 12 days to four, nearly doubled applicant flow and application completion above 85% from about 50%, measure hiring speed and volume; the 2026 proxy says AI-enabled Rewards personalization raised guest conversion, frequency and attachment without numbers; and Scott Boatwright described the cook-to-needs tool's benefits in Oct 2026, less manual data entry and waste, without results. The gain Chipotle does quantify, comparable sales lifts of a couple hundred basis points in restaurants with the High Efficiency Equipment Package (Oct 2026), comes from equipment Chipotle does not describe as AI.

Productivity and headcount

Chipotle employed 130,301 people at Dec 31, 2025, against 130,504 a year earlier, while opening 334 company-owned restaurants in 2025, and said it had nearly 140,000 employees in its Oct 2026 results release. Scott Boatwright said on Apr 29, 2026 that the hours freed by Chipotle Kitchen, the general manager assistant and Ava Cado in hiring are reinvested in the business, not taken out, Jason Kidd said on Jun 2, 2026 that the hours freed by everything Chipotle has added in AI have been reinvested in restaurants, and Ilene Eskenazi said in Oct 2024 that Paradox works as if Chipotle had added administrative support in every restaurant. The 2026 proxy credits CFO Adam Rymer with technology automation tools that supported rapid growth without proportionately increasing headcount.

Governance and risk

Board oversight

Chipotle's Audit & Risk Committee, chaired by Mary Winston, oversees risk assessment and mitigation for cybersecurity, IT security, data privacy, the use of AI, data protection and other technology risks, according to the 2026 proxy, and receives quarterly reports from the Chief Information Security Officer and Curt Garner. Director Matthew Carey, a former CIO of The Home Depot and CTO of eBay and Walmart, sits on the committee.

Disclosed AI risks

Chipotle's FY2025 Form 10-K warns that artificial intelligence and machine learning may not deliver the expected efficiencies and could bring cybersecurity, data privacy, inaccuracy, hallucination, bias or discrimination and intellectual property risks, that the spread of AI heightens cyberattack risks, and that laws on artificial intelligence are among the privacy and data rules Chipotle must follow.

Security program

Chipotle runs its information security program against a NIST framework, uses internal and third-party penetration testing, and screens vendors with risk assessments, threat intelligence and predictive analytics before contracting, according to the FY2025 Form 10-K. A Chipotle job posting from Sep 2026 for a senior IT security engineer calls for building AI-enabled and agentic security workflows and evaluating autonomous security tools.

Stage-gate testing

Chipotle runs new restaurant technology through a stage-gate process: tools are tested at the Cultivate Center in Irvine, Calif., then in restaurants, with crew and guest feedback gathered before wider rollouts are decided, as Curt Garner described for Autocado and the Augmented Makeline in Sep 2024 and Scott Boatwright described for the Ava Cado manager assistant in Apr 2026. Chipotle's FY2024 Form 10-K warned that the kitchen automation might never be widely deployed or materially improve results.

Vendors and data

Chipotle relies on third-party providers for many critical systems and requires vendors with identified security risks to agree contractually to security controls, according to the FY2025 Form 10-K. Chipotle has not published an AI use policy or said how AI vendors such as Paradox handle guest, candidate or employee data.

Quick answers

How does Chipotle Mexican Grill deploy AI?
Chipotle Mexican Grill deploys AI as separate tools for hiring, loyalty and the kitchen, not one platform: Ava Cado, a Paradox conversational AI assistant, has handled hiring for its restaurants since Oct 2024, and an AI model picks out lapsed Rewards members for personalized offers. Chipotle put an AI cook-to-needs forecasting tool into a pilot of more than 500 restaurants in Q3 2026, plans a national rollout in early 2027, and has disclosed no AI spending or return credited to AI.
What does Chipotle Mexican Grill use AI for?
Who leads AI at Chipotle Mexican Grill?
AI at Chipotle Mexican Grill is led by Curt Garner (President, Chief Strategy and Technology Officer); Arlie Sisson (Chief Digital Officer). Ownership of AI on the org chart: Curt Garner, President, Chief Strategy and Technology Officer; CDO Arlie Sisson reports to him.
What AI platform does Chipotle Mexican Grill use?
Chipotle Mexican Grill has no named AI platform: Ava Cado runs on Paradox's hiring software, Chipotle has not named the vendor of its 2026 AI cook-to-needs tool, and Chief Digital Officer Arlie Sisson was adding AI and architecture leadership to her team in Oct 2026.
Which AI models does Chipotle Mexican Grill use?
Chipotle has named no model provider; its disclosed AI comes inside vendor products (Paradox for hiring, Miso Robotics and PreciTaste in 2022 kitchen pilots), and its FY2025 Form 10-K warns of hallucination, bias and intellectual property risks.
How many Chipotle employees use AI?
Ava Cado has handled hiring conversations in Chipotle's restaurants since Oct 2024, and the AI cook-to-needs pilot reached more than 500 of over 4,200 restaurants by Oct 2026; Chipotle has disclosed no AI assistant for support center staff.
How far has AI spread at Chipotle Mexican Grill?
