Key findings
Samsung Electronics ended a 3-year reliance on in-house tools on Jun 12, 2026, when its Device eXperience division gave staff ChatGPT, Gemini Enterprise and Claude side by side, after a pilot with about 2,500 employees in Apr and May 2026 and only for staff who complete security training.
OpenAI said on Jun 21, 2026 that ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex are available to all Samsung Electronics employees in Korea and all DX employees worldwide, one of its largest enterprise launches, and Google Cloud said on Jul 13, 2026 that Gemini Enterprise is going to all DX employees worldwide in a dedicated tenant.
Samsung Electronics' chip division keeps outside generative AI to approved use and builds its own: the DS AI Center reported in Mar 2026 that design agents cut HBM4 lead time by 50%, and Samsung signed with Mistral AI on Sep 9, 2026 to build on-premises models for defect detection and equipment tuning.
Samsung Electronics plans to turn every factory into an AI-Driven Factory by 2030, with AI agents for quality, production and logistics (Mar 2026), and is building a manufacturing AI platform on more than 50,000 Nvidia GPUs announced in Oct 2025.
Samsung Electronics has published no AI return in cost, headcount or revenue, and no count of employees using its AI tools; Samsung instead ties AI to management goals, with AX results a required item in department heads' goals (Feb 2026) and AI training for all Samsung staff due by Feb 2027.
Where Samsung sits
- Stage
- Experimenting
Samsung Electronics has reported no business return it credits to AI since May 2025, for any use case or for the company as a whole: its AI figures are speed and throughput measures with no cost or headcount equivalent, such as a 50% shorter HBM4 design lead time from design agents and production recovery cut to about one third at GTC in Mar 2026, and its Q3 2026 results credit no savings to AI. Samsung Electronics opened ChatGPT, Gemini Enterprise and Claude to all Device eXperience staff on Jun 12, 2026 under DX head Roh Tae-moon, after a 2,500-employee pilot, and OpenAI said on Jun 21, 2026 that ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex are available to every Samsung employee in Korea and all DX staff worldwide, but neither Samsung nor its vendors has said how many employees use the tools. Samsung Electronics places at Experimenting; Piloting would need one return it credits to AI or a reported count of employees using its AI tools.

How they deploy
2 tracks: own models inside, outside models for range
Samsung Electronics built its own generative AI, Samsung Gauss, after engineers leaked source code to ChatGPT in 2023, and has run the Gauss Portal and the code.i coding assistant on its internal network since Dec 2023. Samsung Electronics added ChatGPT, Gemini Enterprise and Claude for DX staff in Jun 2026 without retiring Gauss: a company official said Gauss stays because it is integrated with internal systems, while the outside services bring the newest general models.
Several vendors, chosen by task
Samsung Electronics chose not to standardize on one outside AI service, saying in Jun 2026 that employees should pick the tool that fits each task. Samsung Electronics selected ChatGPT, Gemini Enterprise and Claude after testing candidates with about 2,500 employees, and then signed separate enterprise agreements with OpenAI for ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex (Jun 2026) and with Google Cloud for Gemini Enterprise (Jul 2026).
Chip data stays on-premises
Samsung Electronics' Device Solutions (DS) division treats its semiconductor data as too sensitive for outside services: it limits external generative AI to cases approved through internal sign-off, runs its own DS Assistant, and will build its chip models with Mistral AI on infrastructure inside Samsung's semiconductor network. Samsung said in Sep 2026 that the on-premises approach keeps sensitive technology and operating data entirely within its own boundaries.
AI in the factory, not only the office
Samsung Electronics is putting most of its stated AI ambition into manufacturing: an AI Megafactory with Nvidia that links chip design, process, equipment, operations and quality control (Oct 2025), agentic AI and an Omniverse digital twin of its Pyeongtaek Plant 1 fab (Mar 2026), and a plan to make every global factory an AI-Driven Factory by 2030 (Mar 2026).
AI written into management goals
Samsung Electronics made AX results a required item in department heads' goals by Feb 2026, and Edaily reported in Aug 2026 that the weight of AX capability in executive goal reviews rose from 2 to 5 points to 20 points. Executive Chairman Lee Jae-yong called in his 2026 New Year message for AI in every part of the value chain, from R&D to production, marketing and support, and Samsung group put about 2,300 executives through AI training from Jun to Aug 2026.
- Deployment model
- Samsung Electronics runs AI through its 2 divisions rather than one central office. In the Device eXperience (DX) division, Samsung Research under DX CTO Yoon Jang-hyun builds the Samsung Gauss models, an AI Productivity Innovation Group created in May 2025 under the management innovation center drives AI use across DX with an office in each business, and an AX team set up at the end of 2025 under corporate management support became the AX/PI Center on Jul 1, 2026. In the Device Solutions (DS) division, the AI Center under Song Yong-ho, formed in Dec 2024 from the division's CIO-run innovation center and other AI teams, owns AI for chip design and manufacturing. An AI Strategy Council chaired by the CEO, run by an AI Strategy Team working with AI Strategy Groups in each business, sets AI strategy and governance.
- Model providers
- Samsung Electronics trains its own Samsung Gauss models: Gauss for language, code and images (Nov 2023), the multimodal Gauss2 in Compact, Balanced and Supreme sizes (Nov 2024), and later versions including Gauss 2.3 used to build in-house agents (Nov 2025). Since Jun 2026, DX staff have also used OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini Enterprise and Anthropic's Claude, and OpenAI supplies ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex to all Samsung Electronics employees in Korea and all DX employees worldwide. The DS division will build customized on-premises models on Mistral AI's technology, including Mistral Large (Sep 2026).
- Data and infrastructure
- Samsung Electronics runs Samsung Gauss inside its intranet, which Samsung presented in Nov 2024 as the reason staff use Gauss2 instead of ChatGPT. Gemini Enterprise runs in a Google Cloud tenant dedicated to the DX division, which Google Cloud and Samsung said keeps sensitive data inside a controlled boundary (Jul 2026); Samsung has not said where ChatGPT Enterprise and Claude process its data beyond OpenAI's enterprise data protection and access controls. The DS division's chip models will run on-premises on Samsung's semiconductor infrastructure (Sep 2026), and Samsung is deploying more than 50,000 Nvidia GPUs for its AI Factory, with plans to extend it to global hubs including Taylor, Texas. The DX division also runs 517 high-performance computing servers in its Sangam data center for digital twin product testing (Jul 2026).

Economics & controls
Spend and ROI
Technology and R&D spending
Samsung Electronics does not disclose a technology or AI budget. Samsung Electronics spent KRW 37.8 trillion on R&D in 2025 (2026 Sustainability Report). Samsung's Q3 2026 results deck, which reported KRW 195.3 trillion of revenue and KRW 107.4 trillion of operating profit, says the DX division limited its earnings decline through a higher premium mix, operational efficiency and disciplined cost management, and plans efficiency improvements across all mobile business processes, without saying what part AI plays.
What AI itself costs
Samsung Electronics has not disclosed what it pays OpenAI, Google Cloud or Anthropic for its staff AI services, what it invested when it led Mistral AI's Series D round in Sep 2026, or what its AI Factory on more than 50,000 Nvidia GPUs costs. The DX division runs 517 high-performance computing servers in its Sangam data center for digital twin product testing (Money Today, Jul 2026).
Reported ROI
Samsung Electronics has published no business return it credits to AI: no savings, productivity figure in currency, headcount effect or revenue from its internal AI tools, factory AI or chip AI. The figures Samsung has given are speed measures: HBM4 design lead time cut by 50% with 13% better performance (Mar 2026), production recovery time in the fab cut to about one third (Mar 2026), and a 20x gain in computational lithography performance (Oct 2025). Money Today reported in Jul 2026 that digital twin testing cut TV drop-test validation from about 15 days to 2.
Headcount
Samsung Electronics had 259,149 employees at the end of 2025, down from 262,647 a year earlier, with 124,564 in Korea (2026 Sustainability Report). Samsung Electronics has not tied any headcount change to AI. Roh Tae-moon told mobile executives in Jul 2026 to pair the AX transition with cuts in development and quality costs after the MX business lost about KRW 700 billion in the Jun 2026 quarter (Edaily).
Governance and risk
Outside AI tools
Samsung Electronics banned generative AI tools on company devices and networks in May 2023 after engineers uploaded internal source code and meeting notes to ChatGPT. Since Jun 12, 2026, the DX division allows ChatGPT, Gemini Enterprise and Claude only for employees who complete security training, and the DS division allows outside generative AI only when approved through internal sign-off.
Data boundaries
Samsung Electronics keeps its most sensitive data inside its own environment: Samsung Gauss runs on the company intranet, Gemini Enterprise runs in a Google Cloud tenant dedicated to the DX division, and the chip division's Mistral-based models will process technology and operating data entirely within Samsung's semiconductor infrastructure. OpenAI said in Jun 2026 that ChatGPT Enterprise lets Samsung employees use AI within the company's security policies and governance framework, and Money Today reported in Feb 2026 that Samsung was reviewing controls on data export, access rights and accountability for incidents before adopting outside AI.
AI governance bodies
Samsung Electronics governs AI through the Sustainability Committee of its board and an AI Strategy Council chaired by the CEO, whose AI Strategy Team works with AI Strategy Groups in each business on strategy, governance and checks on implementation. An AI Governance Council of the AI Strategy Team, Samsung Research and the Compliance Team oversees development against Samsung's AI ethics principles of fairness, transparency and accountability, and reports key issues to the board committee (2026 Sustainability Report).
AI in performance management
Samsung Electronics made AX results a required item in department heads' goals by Feb 2026 (Money Today), and Edaily reported in Aug 2026 that the weight of AX capability in executive goal reviews rose from 2 to 5 points to 20 points for the Oct 2026 review, which feeds the Dec 2026 executive appointments.
Safety in factory AI
Samsung Electronics said in Mar 2026 that its governance strategy for expanding AI autonomy in manufacturing builds safety mechanisms in from the design stage, and that environmental safety robots tied to digital twins will monitor hazardous areas where human access is limited.

Quick answers
- How does Samsung Electronics deploy AI?
- Samsung Electronics deploys AI internally on 2 tracks: its own Samsung Gauss models, which run on its internal network, and since Jun 2026 ChatGPT, Gemini Enterprise and Claude for all Device eXperience staff, with ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex also offered to every employee in Korea. The chip division keeps outside tools under approval and builds on-premises models with Nvidia and Mistral AI for its fabs. Samsung Electronics has reported no business return it credits to AI and no count of employees using the tools.
- What does Samsung Electronics use AI for?
- Samsung Electronics has never said how many AI use cases it runs internally; its own releases and Korean press reports describe production use in office work and coding (Gauss Portal, code.i, ChatGPT, Gemini Enterprise, Claude), chip design and fab operations, product testing and customer service, with factory AI agents and Mistral-based chip models announced. Samsung Electronics has published no business return for any internal AI use case and no firm-level return from AI: its reported figures, such as a 50% shorter HBM4 design lead time and a 20x faster lithography computation, measure speed, not cost, headcount or revenue.
- Who leads AI at Samsung Electronics?
- AI at Samsung Electronics is led by Yoon Jang-hyun (President, DX CTO and Head of Samsung Research); Song Yong-ho (Executive Vice President, Head of the AI Center, DS Division); YoungSoo Lee (Executive Vice President, Head of Global Technology Research). Ownership of AI on the org chart: Split by division: DX head Roh Tae-moon and DS head Jun Young-hyun, both co-CEOs.
- What AI platform does Samsung Electronics use?
- Samsung Gauss, built by Samsung Research, powers the Gauss Portal assistant and the code.i coding tool in the Device eXperience (DX) division since Dec 2023; the chip division runs its own DS Assistant, and DX staff have also used ChatGPT, Gemini Enterprise and Claude since Jun 12, 2026.
- Which AI models does Samsung Electronics use?
- Samsung Gauss models in-house; OpenAI ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex, Google Gemini Enterprise and Anthropic Claude for staff; Mistral Large as the base for on-premises chip models (Sep 2026).
- How many Samsung employees use AI?
- ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex are available to all Samsung Electronics employees in Korea and all DX employees worldwide (Jun 2026); Samsung has not said how many of its 259,149 employees use them.
- What return has Samsung Electronics reported from AI?
- Samsung Electronics has reported no business return it credits to AI since May 2025, for any use case or for the company as a whole: its AI figures are speed and throughput measures with no cost or headcount equivalent, such as a 50% shorter HBM4 design lead time from design agents and production recovery cut to about one third at GTC in Mar 2026, and its Q3 2026 results credit no savings to AI.
