totalenergies.comTheir approach to AI
- The platform
- TotalEnergies builds its own AI applications in the Digital Factory, about 500 digital and AI experts in France and India who have built nearly 100 solutions since 2020, on industrial data platforms bought from Cognite and AspenTech (2025 annual report, Mar 2026).
- The models
- TotalEnergies runs more than 10,000 live AI models of its own, gives staff Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Studio agents, and is building frontier subsurface models with Mistral under a program of more than €100 million announced in Sep 2026.
- The reach
- Microsoft reported in Oct 2025 that TotalEnergies had rolled out 30,000 Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses, out of 101,513 employees at the end of 2025; TotalEnergies' own annual report describes only a gradual provision of licenses, with no count.
- The catch
- TotalEnergies has reported no cost, revenue or production figure it credits to AI. Patrick Pouyanné spoke in Feb 2026 of gaining 1% to 2% of plant availability through better maintenance, an aim, and said he was skeptical about AI in the subsurface, the area the Sep 2026 Mistral program targets.

Key findings
TotalEnergies has reported no cost, revenue or production figure it credits to AI; on the Feb 11, 2026 results call Patrick Pouyanné put AI's prize at 1% to 2% more plant availability from better maintenance and said he was skeptical about AI in the subsurface.
TotalEnergies and Mistral announced on Sep 15, 2026 a 3-year program of more than €100 million to build frontier AI models for exploration and reservoir engineering, with a joint laboratory, extending a Jun 2025 innovation lab deal.
TotalEnergies' Digital Factory had about 500 digital and AI experts in France and India by the 2025 annual report (Mar 2026), up from 300 in Jun 2025, and its nearly 100 solutions since 2020 run on more than 10,000 live AI models.
Microsoft reported in Oct 2025 that TotalEnergies had rolled out 30,000 Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses and Copilot Studio agents such as MARGE for maintenance and BuyerCompanion for purchasing, while TotalEnergies' own 2025 annual report gives no license count.
TotalEnergies spent 2025 building data foundations for AI, signing AspenTech Inmation for real-time data across its industrial sites in Jul 2025 and Cognite for all operated upstream assets in Sep 2025, and ordered the Pangea 5 supercomputer, 6 times today's computing power, for 2027.
Where TotalEnergies sits
- Stage
- Experimenting
TotalEnergies has reported no business return it credits to AI since May 2025, for any use case or for the company. On the Feb 11, 2026 results call Patrick Pouyanné described AI's prize as 1% to 2% more plant availability from better maintenance, an aim with no result attached, and Namita Shah, citing process control tests on production assets, said even a 1% to 2% production gain would be enormous, a hope credited to digital in general; the $7.5 billion savings program for 2026 to 2030 is not credited to AI. TotalEnergies has also reported no company-wide AI rollout with a user count: the figure of 30,000 Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses comes from a Microsoft customer story (Oct 2025), while TotalEnergies' 2025 annual report speaks only of a gradual provision of Copilot licenses. TotalEnergies sits at Experimenting on its in-window AI work, led by the Mistral subsurface program (Sep 2026), MethaneLive (Jun 2026), Pangea 5 (May 2026) and the Cognite and AspenTech data platforms (2025); one cost, revenue or production figure TotalEnergies credits to AI, or a Copilot user count published by TotalEnergies with a named owner, would move TotalEnergies to Piloting.

How they deploy
Data platforms first
TotalEnergies executives told investors on Feb 11, 2026 that there is no AI program without a strong data platform, and that TotalEnergies would multiply by 10 the data points collected on its assets and make them available in real time. TotalEnergies signed AspenTech Inmation for real-time data collection across its industrial sites in Jul 2025 and Cognite for all operated upstream assets in Sep 2025, with the data stack expected to be fully deployed by the end of 2027.
Top-down programs
TotalEnergies said in Feb 2026 that it had moved from a bottom-up to a top-down approach and concentrated AI on a few programs. The Summer 2026 shareholders' newsletter names 4 priorities: health, safety and environment; the digital plant, for performance and availability of industrial sites; AI for geosciences, exploration and reservoirs; and modeling for the Integrated Power business, including weather forecasting and electricity trading.
Build in-house, buy the tools
TotalEnergies builds its own applications in the Digital Factory, opened in 2020, which the 2025 annual report says develops, deploys and maintains applications for business units. TotalEnergies buys general-purpose tools: Microsoft 365 Copilot and Power Platform licenses for staff since 2024, Copilot Studio for agents, and industrial data platforms from Cognite and AspenTech.
European models for the subsurface
TotalEnergies chose Mistral, a French model developer, for a joint innovation lab in Jun 2025 and for a 3-year frontier model program for geosciences in Sep 2026. TotalEnergies said the Sep 2026 program creates proprietary models within a European digital ecosystem, and Patrick Pouyanné called exploration and reservoir engineering among the areas where AI can create the greatest value for TotalEnergies.
Talent in India
TotalEnergies is building a global competence center in India with its own staff and end-to-end accountability for its digital programs, aiming for at least 500 engineers by 2027, executives said on Feb 11, 2026. Patrick Pouyanné said the center offers competitive costs but is mainly about access to talent and speed.
- Deployment model
- TotalEnergies runs AI from OneTech, its technical branch of about 3,400 engineers, technicians and researchers led by Executive Committee member Namita Shah. Since Sep 2025 OneTech's Digital Line, headed by Chief Digital Officer Frédéric Gimenez, coordinates the branches' digital transformation plan, leads the Digital Plant and Digital for HSE programs, and builds applications through the Digital Factory, while Data & Digital Technologies runs the data infrastructure. TotalEnergies Global Information Technology Services rolled out Microsoft 365 Copilot and runs the Copilot Studio agent program, which an internal validation committee screens for value, architecture, cybersecurity and duplication (Microsoft, Oct 2025).
- Model providers
- TotalEnergies gives employees Microsoft 365 Copilot, deployed from Feb 2024 after a 300-person test from Sep 2023 and preceded by Bing Chat Enterprise in Aug 2023, and builds agents on Microsoft Copilot Studio. TotalEnergies has worked with Mistral since a Jun 2025 joint innovation lab, whose first use case was an assistant for its 1,000 researchers, and on Sep 15, 2026 the 2 launched a program of more than €100 million to build frontier models, drawing on agentic AI, for geoscientists. TotalEnergies also develops its own machine learning models: the 2025 annual report counts more than 10,000 live AI models, and TotalEnergies brought Predictive Layer's machine learning for energy price projections in-house after buying the company in Dec 2023.
- Data and infrastructure
- TotalEnergies chose AWS as a cloud provider for its Digital Factory in Jul 2021 and Microsoft Azure for digital transformation projects and the Digital Factory in Mar 2021; the company has not said where its AI models run today, or where the Mistral models will be hosted. For subsurface and research computing TotalEnergies runs its own supercomputers at the Jean Féger Scientific and Technical Center in Pau, and on May 6, 2026 it ordered Pangea 5 from Dell Technologies and NVIDIA, an investment of more than €100 million that multiplies computing power by 6 when commissioned in 2027. TotalEnergies said in Jun 2025 that it would examine with Mistral the adoption of AI infrastructure in view of European digital sovereignty, after Patrick Pouyanné said in Apr 2025 that he was uneasy with a cloud market limited to Amazon, Microsoft and Google (Le Monde Informatique).

Economics & controls
Spend and ROI
Technology budget
TotalEnergies invested more than $1 billion in R&D, industrial innovation and digital developments in 2025, with digital about 30% of the overall effort, and spent $810 million of that on R&D with more than 3,500 researchers (2025 annual report). TotalEnergies does not publish a separate IT or AI budget.
What AI itself costs
TotalEnergies has disclosed 2 AI-related investments: more than €100 million over 3 years for the Mistral geoscience program (Sep 2026) and more than €100 million for the Pangea 5 supercomputer, which also serves seismic imaging (May 2026). TotalEnergies has not disclosed what it pays for Microsoft 365 Copilot, Cognite or AspenTech, or its running cost for AI.
Reported ROI
TotalEnergies has reported no business return it credits to AI. On the Feb 11, 2026 results call Patrick Pouyanné said AI's gain would mainly be 1% to 2% more availability from better maintenance, and Namita Shah, citing process control tests on production assets, said even a 1% to 2% production increase would be enormous, a point she made about digital in general. TotalEnergies' $7.5 billion cash savings program for 2026 to 2030, announced in Sep 2025, is not credited to AI.
Productivity markers
Microsoft reported in Oct 2025 that TotalEnergies' MARGE agent improved the identification of maintenance fault causes by 25% to 45% and that the BuyerCompanion agent should save 10% on certain purchases; neither is a realized cost figure published by TotalEnergies. TotalEnergies executives said in Feb 2026 that AI halves the time needed to forecast weather for power trading, a speed measure with no cost or revenue attached.
Headcount
TotalEnergies had 101,513 employees at Dec 31, 2025, against 102,887 a year earlier, and has made no statement linking headcount to AI. Olivier Lacroze told Microsoft in Oct 2025 that TotalEnergies' approach is about augmenting people, not replacing them, and Patrick Pouyanné said in Feb 2026 that the India competence center offers competitive costs but is mainly about talent.
Governance and risk
Board oversight
TotalEnergies' Strategy & CSR Committee, chaired by Patrick Pouyanné, reviewed the company's digital ambition and AI on Mar 19, 2025, and the Board's 2025 self-assessment set a 2026 action to review the impact of technological disruptions, including AI, on TotalEnergies' businesses and the associated risks (2025 annual report).
People keep the final decision
TotalEnergies says it does not use fully autonomous decision-making systems on its sensitive sites: final decisions rest with expert teams, AI recommendations serve as decision aids, and systems must meet performance requirements and keep decisions traceable (Spring 2025 shareholders' newsletter).
Agent approval
TotalEnergies set up an internal validation committee that assesses each Copilot Studio agent's business value, technical and architectural viability and cybersecurity, and blocks redundant agents, according to Olivier Lacroze in Microsoft's Oct 2025 customer story.
Data sovereignty
TotalEnergies said the Sep 2026 Mistral program creates proprietary models within a European digital ecosystem, and Mistral said its models protect the intellectual property of companies that adopt them. In Jun 2025 TotalEnergies and Mistral agreed to examine AI infrastructure for TotalEnergies in view of European digital sovereignty.
Disclosed risks
TotalEnergies' 2025 annual report lists AI among the technologies that widen its cyberattack surface, including deepfakes and automated phishing, and names a risk that the company fails to adapt its organization and skills to AI at the right pace.

- TotalEnergies runs more than 10,000 live AI models of its own, gives staff Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Studio agents, and is building frontier subsurface models with Mistral under a program of more than €100 million announced in Sep 2026.
- How many TotalEnergies employees use AI?
- Microsoft reported in Oct 2025 that TotalEnergies had rolled out 30,000 Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses, out of 101,513 employees at the end of 2025; TotalEnergies' own annual report describes only a gradual provision of licenses, with no count.
- What return has TotalEnergies reported from AI?
- TotalEnergies has reported no business return it credits to AI since May 2025, for any use case or for the company.
