AIG (American International Group) deploys AI mainly through Underwriting by AIG Assist and Claims by AIG Assist, tools it built on Palantir's platforms and Anthropic's Claude models to read, enrich and rank broker submissions and claim files. AIG had deployed AIG Assist to eight lines of business by May 2026 and is beta testing a multi-agent underwriting system, but has published no business return it credits to AI and no count of AI users. CEO Eric Andersen says AI should let colleagues serve more clients, not reduce their number.
aig.comTheir approach to AI
- The platform

Key findings
AIG put its first generative AI underwriting tool, then called AIG Underwriter Assistance, into production in U.S. Financial Lines by Mar 2025, expanded the tool, now Underwriting by AIG Assist, to seven more lines of business by Feb 2026, and planned the rollout to the rest of North America, the UK and EMEA for 2026.
AIG has published no business return it credits to AI: Peter Zaffino said on May 1, 2026 that AIG Assist helped Lexington middle market property quote 30% more submissions, cut time to quote by 55% and bind about 40% more submissions, all operating measures with no premium, revenue or cost figure, and said clarity on AI's costs and revenue benefits may come in 2027 or 2028.
AIG builds AIG Assist on partners' models and platforms: Anthropic's Claude for reasoning and extraction, Palantir's Foundry for an ontology, or digital twin, of AIG's business, and AWS Titan and Textract for document ingestion, per its Mar 2025 Investor Day architecture.
AIG's 2026 proxy statement says the board oversees AI strategy directly, a Global AI Policy governs internally and externally hosted AI, and an AI Advisory Council led by the Chief Digital Officer approves new AI use cases.
Eric Andersen, AIG's CEO since Jun 1, 2026, said on Aug 7, 2026 that AIG's AI strategy is to make colleagues more efficient and serve more clients, not to employ fewer people, and AIG has given no figure for its AI spending.
Where AIG sits
- Stage
- Experimenting
AIG has reported no business return it credits to AI, for any use case or for the company: the Lexington middle market property results Peter Zaffino said on May 1, 2026 that Underwriting by AIG Assist helped deliver (30% more submissions quoted, 55% less time to quote and about 40% more submissions bound) are operating measures with no premium, revenue or cost figure, the more than $500 million of AIG Next run-rate savings in 2025 is not credited to AI, and Zaffino said clarity on AI's costs and revenue benefits may come in 2027 or 2028. AIG has not reported a company-wide AI rollout with a user count either: Underwriting by AIG Assist runs in eight lines of business (May 2026) and Chief Digital Officer Scott Hallworth owns AIG's GenAI strategy, but AIG has not said how many of its about 22,100 employees use its AI tools. AIG is therefore at Experimenting; one return it credits to AI, such as premium or cost from AIG Assist, or a reported count of employees using its AI tools would move it to Piloting.

How they deploy
Start at the core: underwriting, then claims
Peter Zaffino said on May 1, 2026 that AIG started its AI work in underwriting, where the impact would be most profound, and then moved to claims. AIG's Mar 2025 Investor Day set out its build principles: a targeted, high-impact use case, co-creation with the business, a human-in-the-loop design, an agentic, modular architecture, and measured outcomes. AIG's 2025 annual report says that underwriting processes, while disciplined, remain largely manual, and that AIG is building infrastructure rather than chasing features.
Build on partners' platforms
AIG built AIG Assist itself on bought components: Anthropic's Claude models, Palantir's Foundry and AIP, and AWS services, and its 2025 annual report names Palantir, Anthropic, AWS and Google as the partners it expanded with in 2025. Peter Zaffino told TIME in Jul 2025 that AIG treats Palantir as a thought partner on turning data into value and works with each new Claude release to improve extraction and cut cycle time. Peter Zaffino said in Feb 2026 that AIG outsources back-office work to Accenture, which is building agent-based large language model capabilities, and that AIG shares in the design of the orchestration and in the savings.
An ontology of the business
AIG is building an ontology, a digital twin of its business with defined concepts, processes, data elements and workflows, on Palantir's Foundry platform. AIG used the same approach to model Everest's global retail commercial portfolio after agreeing in Oct 2025 to take over its renewal rights from Jan 2026, to build the portfolio for Lloyd's Syndicate 2479 in Dec 2025, when AIG said its ontology gives its models access to more than four million industry data points, and to set underwriting criteria on McGill and Partners' specialty portfolio in Mar 2026.
From single tools to orchestrated agents
AIG's 2025 annual report says AIG is building an orchestration layer that defines when AI agents are activated, what information they can reach, how tasks are sequenced and where human oversight is required, and AIG described on its Feb 11, 2026 call knowledge assistants, adviser agents, and critic agents that challenge the other agents and the underwriter's decisions. Peter Zaffino said on May 1, 2026 that AIG, with Palantir and Anthropic, had begun beta testing a multi-agent underwriting system of purpose-built agents, in which, for example, one agent may ingest submissions, another check risks against underwriting guidelines and another benchmark pricing, coordinated by a collaboration agent.
Capacity, not cuts
Eric Andersen said on Aug 7, 2026 that AIG's AI deployment is meant to make colleagues more efficient and let them work with more clients, not to reduce their number. Peter Zaffino said in Feb 2026 that the biggest surprise was AIG's ability to process submission flow well beyond expectations without adding staff, and told TIME in Jul 2025 that AIG was training its system to act as a junior underwriter handling about 70% of the work, with experienced underwriters doing the rest.
- Deployment model
- AIG runs AI as central digital and AI teams building shared tools that the underwriting and claims organizations put to work. Chief Digital Officer Scott Hallworth owns digital, data and GenAI strategy and chairs the AI Advisory Council, Chief Technology and Digital Officer Roshan Navagamuwa runs technology, cybersecurity and digital and AI strategy, and the AIG AI Center of Excellence builds and deploys AI systems to priorities set by the council and AIG's leadership. CDO Magazine reported in Jun 2026 that AIG added Head of Agentic AI Solutions to Global Chief Data Officer Jim Young's role, covering AI strategy and implementation across underwriting and claims and AI governance. AIG's 2026 proxy statement says underwriting and claims were restructured in 2025 to scale the data, digital and GenAI strategy, and credits Jon Hancock, then running the international and personal insurance businesses, with working with the digital and AI teams on Underwriting by AIG Assist to simplify end-to-end underwriting.
- Model providers
- AIG's main model provider is Anthropic: Peter Zaffino said on the Feb 11, 2026 call that AIG began with Claude 2.0 and has moved up with each release, to the 4.6 release by then, and AIG's Mar 2025 Investor Day architecture used Claude 3.5 for ingestion, augmentation and prioritization. The same architecture lists Palantir's AIP for prompt engineering, model integration and pipeline orchestration, AWS Titan and Textract in the ingestion layer, AWS Bedrock in the augmentation layer, and separate AI model garden and orchestration and governance layers. AIG's 2025 annual report says AIG used multiple large language models to build the Syndicate 2479 portfolio, and Fortune reported in May 2026 that Anthropic has Claude in production at AIG.
- Data and infrastructure
- AIG ingests unstructured broker submissions, PDFs and policy documents and connects them with internal and external data through Palantir's Foundry, MuleSoft integration and a retrieval-augmented generation design in which an underwriter confirms or corrects each extracted value (Mar 2025). Roshan Navagamuwa led AIG's cloud strategy and technology modernization as CIO from 2024, and AIG is working with Google in Japan on an AI-enabled cloud foundation for document processing, knowledge management and customer service (2025 annual report). AIG has not said in which cloud regions Claude inference runs or whether any model runs in AIG's own data centers, and Peter Zaffino said in May 2026 that GDPR makes Europe the hardest region in which to roll out AI.
Platforms and internal tools
Underwriting by AIG AssistBy Mar 2025
Underwriting by AIG Assist, first shown as AIG Underwriter Assistance at the Mar 2025 Investor Day, extracts the key fields from broker submissions, augments them with internal and external research, summarizes each submission and ranks submissions by appetite and propensity to bind; AIG said in Mar 2025 that the tool prepares submissions for underwriter review within one day and lets underwriters review all of them, against a manual underwriting timeline of about three to four weeks. AIG Assist went live in U.S. Financial Lines (private and not-for-profit) and spread to seven more lines of business by Feb 2026, including Lexington; AIG also uses AIG Assist to ingest acquired policies and prioritize renewals.

Claims by AIG Assist2025, as a pilot
Claims by AIG Assist applies the ingestion, augmentation and prioritization built for underwriting to claims, extracting claim and policy details and supporting coverage review. AIG's 2025 annual report says that where it is deployed, first notice of loss processing fell from days to hours and some coverage and endorsement reviews from hours to minutes.
AIG ontology on Palantir FoundryBy Mar 2025
AIG's ontology is a digital twin of its business, mapping processes, workflows and data relationships on Palantir's Foundry so AI agents can work with AIG's core systems. AIG built separate ontologies for the Everest renewal-rights portfolio and McGill and Partners' specialty book, and said in Dec 2025, when it formed Syndicate 2479, that its ontology lets its models reach more than four million industry data points.

Adoption
AIG has spread AI through its underwriting and claims workflows rather than through a general employee assistant, and it has not disclosed a firmwide AI tool or a count of AI users. AIG Underwriter Assistance was live in U.S. Financial Lines by Mar 2025, Underwriting by AIG Assist was in seven more lines including Lexington by Feb 2026, for eight in all, and Claims by AIG Assist launched as a pilot in 2025. AIG's 2026 objectives in its proxy statement call for faster rollout of both tools across its businesses and for embedding GenAI throughout the organization, and a learning portal AIG launched in 2025 covers AI fluency among other skills.

Economics & controls
Spend and ROI
Technology budget
AIG does not disclose a technology budget or a separate figure for AI spending. AIG's 2025 annual report says the AIG Next program exceeded its target with more than $500 million of run-rate savings in 2025, and the 2026 proxy statement says savings from new operating models, exited transition services and lower-cost locations funded strategic investments in data, digital and GenAI; AIG does not credit those savings to AI.
What AI itself costs
AIG has not published what its models, tokens or partner platforms cost. Asked on May 1, 2026 how variable AI token costs would affect returns, Peter Zaffino said AIG would give much more clarity on the expense components and the revenue benefits of AI in 2027 or 2028, and that efficiencies from agent orchestration would create bandwidth to reinvest in the business.
Reported ROI
AIG reports no business-level return it credits to AI, for any use case or for the company. For Lexington middle market property, Peter Zaffino said on May 1, 2026 that AIG Assist had helped deliver 30% more submissions quoted, a 55% shorter time to quote and about 40% more binding of submissions, and AIG's 2025 annual report (Mar 2026) said the submit-to-bind ratio there had improved 35% since the AIG Assist rollout began, which AIG described as productivity gains. These are operating measures: AIG has given no premium, revenue or cost figure for them, and no firm-level figure for AI's effect.
Lexington growth ambition
AIG's 2025 annual report says AI is supporting growth in Lexington's new business submissions, which rose 26% to more than 370,000 in 2025, but AIG has not said how much of that rise AI accounts for. AIG's Mar 2025 Investor Day set a 2030 ambition, with the adoption of technology, of 500,000 submissions, a 6% bind rate and about $4 billion of new business premium, against about $1 billion in 2024; the ambition is a target, not a reported result.
Expense ratio
AIG committed at its Mar 2025 Investor Day to a General Insurance expense ratio below 30% within 2025 to 2027, and Keith Walsh said on Aug 7, 2026 that the trailing 12-month ratio was 30.7% at Jun 30, 2026 and on track for below 30% in full-year 2027. Eric Andersen said technology will play a big role in AIG becoming more efficient, but AIG has not said how much of the expense ratio target depends on AI.
Headcount
AIG had about 22,100 employees at Dec 31, 2025. Eric Andersen said on Aug 7, 2026 that AIG's AI strategy is not to have fewer colleagues but to make them more efficient and serve more clients, and Peter Zaffino said in Feb 2026 that AIG was processing far more submissions than expected without additional staff. Zaffino told TIME in Jul 2025 that underwriting assistant roles would get simpler and that AIG is retraining staff for new roles.
Governance and risk
Board oversight
AIG's board maintains direct oversight of AI strategy and related risks and receives periodic updates from management on building, using and accessing AI responsibly and within regulatory requirements, according to the 2026 proxy statement, which added this disclosure after shareholder engagement. AIG's directors receive ongoing education on AI, data and digital strategy.
AI Policy and AI Advisory Council
The AIG Global Artificial Intelligence Policy sets requirements for governing internally and externally hosted or developed AI systems. Under the policy, AIG runs an AI Advisory Council led by the Chief Digital Officer with senior staff from Legal, Technology, Data, Enterprise Risk Management, Digital, Business Operations and Procurement; its Steering Group decides escalation and remediation of AI risks and its Working Group evaluates and approves new AI use cases and technologies.
Humans in the loop
AIG designed AIG Assist so an underwriter confirms or corrects the values the model extracts (Mar 2025), and Peter Zaffino told TIME in Jul 2025 that underwriters still make the underwriting and policy decisions. AIG's orchestration layer sets when agents act, what data they can reach and where human oversight is required, and Zaffino said on May 1, 2026 that AIG will see what every agent is doing and can intervene in real time.
Regulation and disclosed risks
AIG's 2025 Form 10-K says AIG applies generative AI to parts of underwriting and claims, lists risks including biased or inaccurate outputs from flawed models or training data, misuse of personal data and intellectual property infringement, and cites the NAIC's Dec 2023 model bulletin on insurers' use of AI, NYDFS guidance and the EU AI Act. Peter Zaffino said in May 2026 that GDPR makes Europe the hardest region in which to test or roll out AI.
Pay tied to GenAI
AIG's 2026 proxy statement lists scaling data and digital strategies, including faster rollout of Underwriting by AIG Assist and Claims by AIG Assist, among the company's 2026 objectives, and cites Peter Zaffino's use of AI to improve digital workflow among the reasons for raising his 2025 pay targets.
Recent signals

Quick answers
- How does AIG deploy AI?
- AIG (American International Group) deploys AI mainly through Underwriting by AIG Assist and Claims by AIG Assist, tools it built on Palantir's platforms and Anthropic's Claude models to read, enrich and rank broker submissions and claim files. AIG had deployed AIG Assist to eight lines of business by May 2026 and is beta testing a multi-agent underwriting system, but has published no business return it credits to AI and no count of AI users. CEO Eric Andersen says AI should let colleagues serve more clients, not reduce their number.
- What does AIG use AI for?
- AIG has not published a count of its AI use cases; the ones it names sit in underwriting, where Underwriting by AIG Assist is in use in eight lines of business, in claims, in portfolio analytics for acquisitions and special purpose vehicles, and in an AI-run follow facility with McGill and Partners. AIG has reported no business return it credits to AI for any of these use cases and no firm-level AI return: for Underwriting by AIG Assist in Lexington middle market property it gives operating measures, such as about 40% more submissions bound (May 2026), with no premium, revenue or cost figure, and Peter Zaffino said in May 2026 that AI's cost and revenue effects may become clearer in 2027 or 2028.
- Who leads AI at AIG?
- AI at AIG is led by Scott Hallworth (EVP and Chief Digital Officer); Roshan Navagamuwa (EVP and Chief Technology and Digital Officer); Jim Young (Global Chief Data Officer and Head of Agentic AI Solutions). Ownership of AI on the org chart: EVP and Chief Digital Officer Scott Hallworth, alongside Chief Technology and Digital Officer Roshan Navagamuwa.
- What AI platform does AIG use?
- Underwriting by AIG Assist, which AIG built with Palantir and Anthropic and had in production by Mar 2025, extracts, enriches and ranks broker submissions; Claims by AIG Assist applies the same capabilities to claim files (Mar 2026).
- Which AI models does AIG use?
- AIG runs Anthropic's Claude models with Palantir's Foundry and AIP platforms, its Mar 2025 architecture also lists AWS Bedrock, Titan and Textract, and AIG works with Google on an AI cloud foundation in Japan.
- How many AIG employees use AI?
- AIG had deployed Underwriting by AIG Assist to eight lines of business by May 2026, with the rollout to the rest of North America, the UK and EMEA due in 2026; AIG has not published how many of its about 22,100 employees use AI tools.
- How far has AI spread at AIG?
- AIG has reported no business return it credits to AI, for any use case or for the company: the Lexington middle market property results Peter Zaffino said on May 1, 2026 that Underwriting by AIG Assist helped deliver (30% more submissions quoted, 55% less time to quote and about 40% more submissions bound) are operating measures with no premium, revenue or cost figure, the more than $500 million of AIG Next run-rate savings in 2025 is not credited to AI, and Zaffino said clarity on AI's costs and revenue benefits may come in 2027 or 2028.
