Their approach to AI

The platform
Pfizer's technology team builds and manages an enterprise AI backbone while each division owns its AI strategy, model use and investment (Fortune, Sep 2026); named tools include Vox for scientists and Charlie for marketing content.
The models
Pfizer's Vox gave scientists Anthropic's Claude 2.1 through Amazon Bedrock (undated AWS case study), Charlie generated marketing content with a custom version of ChatGPT built with Publicis Groupe (Feb 2024), and Boltz and Chai Discovery supply drug discovery models (2026).
The reach
Pfizer says 98% of eligible employees have taken the first course of its AI certification program, which Fortune reported in Sep 2026 as 98% of the workforce; Pfizer employed about 75,000 people at the end of 2025 and has not published how many use its AI tools each week.
The catch
Pfizer has published no business return credited to AI alone: Albert Bourla gives no figure for Golden Batch's share of manufacturing savings, and Pfizer has not separated AI's share of its wider cost savings from simplification. Pfizer's AI leadership also changed hands in 2026: Jeremy Forman became Chief AI, Data and Analytics Officer in Feb 2026, Lidia Fonseca left the Chief Digital and Technology Officer role in Apr 2026, and Dennis Hancock was promoted to CIO by Jul 2026.

Key findings

  1. Pfizer has published no business return credited to AI alone. Albert Bourla said on Feb 3, 2026 that a very big part of the savings from Pfizer's manufacturing optimization program, about $600 million through 2025, came from the Golden Batch AI use case, without giving its share, and called AI a significant contributor to the $5.6 billion of cost Pfizer took out (Jan 12, 2026) and the main lever alongside simplification (Feb 3, 2026), without separating AI's share; in Aug 2026 Pfizer added $1.0 billion of savings for 2027 to 2029, citing technology and simplification.

  2. Pfizer says 98% of eligible employees have taken the first course of its AI certification program, and Fortune reported in Sep 2026 that each Pfizer division owns its AI strategy, model use and investment while the technology team builds and manages the enterprise AI backbone.

  3. Albert Bourla made scaling AI one of Pfizer's four strategic priorities for 2026 and said on Feb 3, 2026 that Pfizer is expanding to more than 1,200 GPUs over two years, largely for AI in R&D.

  4. Pfizer's AI leadership turned over in 2026: Jeremy Forman was promoted to Chief AI, Data and Analytics Officer in Feb 2026, Lidia Fonseca left the Chief Digital and Technology Officer role in Apr 2026 to become Senior Advisor to the CEO (Medtronic proxy, Aug 2026), and CDO Magazine reported on Jul 6, 2026 that Pfizer promoted Dennis Hancock, at Pfizer since 1995, to CIO and EVP over enterprise technology, digital and AI strategy.

  5. Pfizer sources drug discovery models from partners: Boltz agreed in Jan 2026 to refine its open-source models on Pfizer's historical data into exclusive Pfizer models, and Pfizer licensed Chai Discovery's Chai-3 antibody design model in Jun 2026.

Stage
Experimenting

Pfizer has reported no business return credited to AI alone, which places it in Experimenting. Albert Bourla said on Feb 3, 2026 that a very big part of the savings from Pfizer's manufacturing optimization program, about $600 million through 2025, came from the Golden Batch AI use case, but gave no figure for its share; Bourla also called AI a significant contributor to the $5.6 billion of cost Pfizer took out in 2024 and 2025, a program that also credits simplification, without separating AI's share. Pfizer has not said how many of its about 75,000 employees use its AI tools: the 98% figure counts eligible employees who took the first course of its AI certification program, a training measure, although CIO Dennis Hancock leads enterprise technology, digital and AI strategy. Pfizer would reach Piloting with one published return credited to AI, such as Golden Batch's share of the manufacturing savings, or a company-reported count of employees using its AI tools.

How they deploy

Scaling AI is a 2026 priority

Pfizer lists scaling AI across the business as one of its four strategic priorities for 2026 in its 2025 Form 10-K, beside maximizing key transactions, R&D milestones and post-2028 growth. Albert Bourla said on Feb 3, 2026 that Pfizer had laid the groundwork with AI-ready data, agentic workflows and compute capacity, and on May 5, 2026 said the coming years are the time to carry out the AI transformation of Pfizer rather than pursue a large merger.

Divisions own use cases, technology runs the backbone

Fortune reported in Sep 2026 that every Pfizer division owns its AI strategy, model use and investments, while Pfizer's technology team develops and manages the enterprise AI backbone across those use cases. Chris Boshoff said in Feb 2026 that Pfizer R&D is recruiting AI engineers into each function, from discovery and regulatory to pharmacovigilance and clinical trial execution, to measure productivity, speed and cost. Alexandre de Germay said in Sep 2026 that Pfizer's international commercial division sets its own AI priorities, tests tools and then rolls them out across its markets.

Training alongside tools

Pfizer says 98% of eligible employees have taken the first course of an AI certification program tailored to every role and function, which Fortune reported in Sep 2026 as 98% of the workforce. Albert Bourla said in May 2026 that Pfizer pairs frontier AI tools tailored to each function and role with continuously updated training, and told Fortune in Jan 2026 that companies will win with AI by transforming their own organizations, not by choosing the right vendor.

Partners for science models

Pfizer works with outside AI developers for drug discovery models: XtalPi on molecular modeling since May 2018 and on quantum computing, PostEra on AI drug discovery, Boltz from Jan 2026 to refine open-source biomolecular foundation models into exclusive models trained on Pfizer's historical data, and Chai Discovery from Jun 2026 for its Chai-3 antibody design model. Pfizer keeps full ownership of compounds discovered with the Boltz models.

AI as a cost lever

Pfizer ties part of its multiyear cost realignment program to AI. In Apr 2025 Pfizer added about $1.2 billion of targeted savings, mainly in selling, informational and administrative costs, driven in large part by digital enablement including automation and AI along with simpler processes. In Aug 2026 Pfizer added another $1.0 billion for 2027 to 2029 from technology and simplification across commercial, R&D and enabling functions, which Albert Bourla described as powered in part by rapid advances in technology.

Deployment model
Pfizer runs AI as a shared backbone with delivery in the businesses. Pfizer's technology organization, Pfizer Digital, builds and manages the enterprise AI backbone, while each division sets its own AI strategy, model use and spending (Fortune, Sep 2026). Chief Digital and Technology Officer Lidia Fonseca led the organization until Apr 2026, and CIO and EVP Dennis Hancock now leads Pfizer's enterprise technology, digital and AI strategy (CDO Magazine, Jul 2026). Jeremy Forman, promoted to Chief AI, Data and Analytics Officer in Feb 2026, is charged with integrating AI and data across the enterprise (CDO Magazine, Feb 2026). Pfizer also has an AI Council, which Chief AI and Analytics Officer Berta Rodriguez-Hervas joined as co-chair in Aug 2024. R&D embeds AI engineers in each function, and Pfizer's enabling functions use AI that its large technology vendors build into their platforms, Pfizer's CFO said in Feb 2026.
Model providers
Pfizer uses several model providers and lets divisions choose their model use (Fortune, Sep 2026). Pfizer built Vox on AWS with large language models from Amazon SageMaker and Amazon Bedrock (AWS re:Invent, Nov 2023), and an undated AWS case study says Vox search uses Anthropic's Claude 2.1 through Bedrock. Charlie, the marketing content platform Pfizer built with Publicis Groupe on its Marcel platform, generates content with a custom version of ChatGPT (Digiday, Feb 2024). For science, Pfizer licenses Chai Discovery's Chai-3 model (Jun 2026), has Boltz refine its open-source Boltz-2 and BoltzGen models on Pfizer data (Jan 2026), and works with XtalPi and PostEra. Pfizer's 2025 Form 10-K lists reliance on a small number of AI models or service providers as a risk.
Data and infrastructure
Pfizer runs most of its infrastructure in the cloud: AWS's page on Lidia Fonseca's re:Invent keynote (Nov 2023) says Pfizer went from about 10% to 80% cloud-based and built a Scientific Data Cloud with AWS that gathers data from hundreds of lab instruments. Pfizer and Amazon Web Services launched the Pfizer-Amazon Collaboration Team (PACT) in 2021 in Pfizer's Pharmaceutical Sciences Small Molecule group, applying AWS analytics, machine learning, compute and storage to lab, clinical manufacturing and clinical supply work; five of PACT's first 14 prototypes moved into production. Albert Bourla said on Feb 3, 2026 that Pfizer is expanding to more than 1,200 GPUs over two years, largely for R&D, without saying where they run. Bourla said in May 2026 that Pfizer holds a large repository of small and large molecule, translational and clinical data for AI to mine, and the Boltz collaboration refines models on that historical data while Pfizer keeps ownership of any compounds.

Use cases

Pfizer has not published a count of its AI use cases; its executives describe AI in production across drug discovery, clinical development, regulatory, pharmacovigilance, manufacturing, supply planning, field sales, marketing and enabling functions. Pfizer has not published a return figure for any AI use case: Albert Bourla said in Feb 2026 that a very big part of the savings from Pfizer's manufacturing optimization program, which reached about $600 million by the end of 2025, came from the Golden Batch use case, without giving Golden Batch's share. At the firm level Bourla said in Jan 2026 that AI was a significant contributor to the $5.6 billion of cost Pfizer took out, without separating AI's share from simplification and pipeline prioritization.

Spend and ROI

Technology and AI spend

Pfizer does not disclose a technology budget or what AI costs. Pfizer expects to invest about $11 billion in R&D in 2026 and is expanding to more than 1,200 GPUs over two years, largely for AI in R&D (Feb 2026 earnings call). Pfizer's AI-linked savings carry one-time costs that include digital enablement: about $1.6 billion for the Apr 2025 savings tranche and about $2.0 billion for the Aug 2026 tranche, alongside implementation and severance.

Reported ROI

Pfizer has not published a dollar return for AI on its own. Albert Bourla said on Jan 12, 2026 that AI was a significant contributor to the $5.6 billion of cost Pfizer took out, with more in manufacturing, and on Feb 3, 2026 that AI was the main lever, with simplification also contributing, that let Pfizer cut costs without hurting revenue. Pfizer's 2025 Form 10-K puts the Realigning Our Cost Base program at $5.1 billion of net savings through 2025, plus about $500 million of R&D savings from pipeline focus and optimization including digital capabilities, which Chris Boshoff tied to prioritization; Pfizer expects $6.7 billion of program savings through 2029 after the Aug 2026 expansion. Bourla said a very big part of the manufacturing optimization program's savings, about $600 million by the end of 2025, came from deploying the Golden Batch use case, without giving its share.

Productivity markers

Aamir Malik said in Feb 2026 that AI has raised Pfizer's marketing return on investment by targeting spend more precisely and lets field forces spend more time with physicians, and Pfizer said in Aug 2026 that scaling AI supported its field force in driving access and uptake for new launches. Alexandre de Germay said in Sep 2026 that the productivity of Pfizer's international sales organization tripled in three years, crediting a more focused deployment of resources and, for a lot of the gain, advanced analytics and AI. Pfizer told Fortune in Sep 2026 that AI virtual screening cuts scientific computation by as much as 90% at times versus lab work, and an undated AWS case study says Pfizer estimated Vox could save scientists up to 16,000 hours of searching a year.

Headcount

Pfizer employed about 75,000 people at Dec 31, 2025. Pfizer has not said how many roles its AI-linked savings remove, but the one-time costs of the Apr 2025 and Aug 2026 savings tranches are mainly severance, digital enablement and implementation, and Albert Bourla said in Feb 2026 that Pfizer improved productivity rather than simply cutting cost.

Governance and risk

Board oversight

Pfizer's board counts cybersecurity and AI among the enterprise risks it considers (2026 proxy), and the Audit Committee oversees cybersecurity risk management (2025 Form 10-K). Pfizer's 2026 proxy reports that investors asked whether the board is recruiting directors with AI expertise; the board answered that some directors bring technology experience, including AI, and Scott Gottlieb's proxy biography cites his seats on the boards of Tempus AI and Xaira Therapeutics.

AI Council and responsible use

Pfizer runs an AI Council, which Chief AI and Analytics Officer Berta Rodriguez-Hervas joined as co-chair in Aug 2024; Pfizer has not said who co-chairs the AI Council since Jeremy Forman's Feb 2026 promotion. Pfizer's business conduct policies cover the responsible use of AI along with privacy and the protection of confidential information (2026 proxy).

Review of generated content

Pfizer's Charlie platform labels marketing content red, yellow or green so medical reviewers can focus on new claims, validates answers against previously published and approved Pfizer content, and keeps a human review step for outputs, according to Digiday (Feb 2024).

Disclosed risks

Pfizer's 2025 Form 10-K warns that generative AI output can be false, inconsistent or hard to reproduce, that models can degrade through data drift or vendor updates, that training data may lack the necessary rights, that AI use could leak confidential information, and that reliance on a small number of AI models or providers is a risk. Pfizer's 2026 quarterly filings add the risk that expected savings from AI, automation and digital enablement may not arrive on time or in full, and the 10-K names the EU AI Act among the rules that affect Pfizer.

Data and IP in partnerships

Pfizer keeps full ownership of all compounds discovered or developed with Boltz's models, and the models Boltz refines on Pfizer's historical data are exclusive to Pfizer (Jan 2026). Pfizer's chief information security officer works with the Chief Digital Officer, CFO and Chief Legal Officer on cyber risk, which the 10-K says increasingly includes adversarial AI techniques such as automated phishing.

Quick answers

How does Pfizer deploy AI?
Pfizer deploys AI through an enterprise backbone run by its technology team, while each division owns its AI strategy, models and spending. Named tools include Vox, which gave scientists Anthropic's Claude on Amazon Bedrock, and Charlie for marketing content; Boltz and Chai Discovery supply drug discovery models. Pfizer has published no return credited to AI alone: Albert Bourla ties AI to $5.6 billion of cost cuts and the Golden Batch use case to manufacturing savings, without separating AI's share.
What does Pfizer use AI for?
Who leads AI at Pfizer?
AI at Pfizer is led by Lidia Fonseca (Senior Advisor to the CEO; Chief Digital and Technology Officer, Jan 2019 to Apr 2026); Dennis Hancock (Chief Information Officer and Executive Vice President); Jeremy Forman (Chief AI, Data and Analytics Officer). Ownership of AI on the org chart: CIO and EVP Dennis Hancock; Chief AI, Data and Analytics Officer Jeremy Forman (Feb 2026).
What AI platform does Pfizer use?
Pfizer's technology team builds and manages an enterprise AI backbone while each division owns its AI strategy, model use and investment (Fortune, Sep 2026); named tools include Vox for scientists and Charlie for marketing content.
Which AI models does Pfizer use?
Pfizer's Vox gave scientists Anthropic's Claude 2.1 through Amazon Bedrock (undated AWS case study), Charlie generated marketing content with a custom version of ChatGPT built with Publicis Groupe (Feb 2024), and Boltz and Chai Discovery supply drug discovery models (2026).
How many Pfizer employees use AI?
Pfizer says 98% of eligible employees have taken the first course of its AI certification program, which Fortune reported in Sep 2026 as 98% of the workforce; Pfizer employed about 75,000 people at the end of 2025 and has not published how many use its AI tools each week.
How far has AI spread at Pfizer?

Open questions

  • Does CIO and EVP Dennis Hancock report directly to Albert Bourla and sit on the Executive Leadership Team, when did he take over the technology, digital and AI remit Lidia Fonseca held until Apr 2026, and does Chief AI, Data and Analytics Officer Jeremy Forman report to him?
  • Has Berta Rodriguez-Hervas, Chief AI and Analytics Officer from Aug 2024, left Pfizer, and who co-chairs the AI Council now?
  • How many Pfizer employees use AI tools each week, as distinct from the 98% of eligible employees who took the first AI course, and which tools do they use?

  • How much of the tripling of international sales force productivity that Alexandre de Germay described in Sep 2026 does Pfizer credit to AI rather than to a more focused deployment of resources?
  • Can Pfizer's own value figures for AI be confirmed? A third-party summary of a Lidia Fonseca interview attributes to her more than $1 billion of incremental value from AI programs, and a Pfizer biography of Fonseca, seen only in a search summary, said AI was expected to deliver $4 billion; neither appears in Pfizer's filings or earnings calls.
  • Where do Pfizer's planned 1,200-plus GPUs run: in Pfizer's own data centers, on AWS or with another cloud provider?
  • Which models power Pfizer's enterprise AI backbone today, beyond the Claude 2.1 in Vox and the custom ChatGPT in Charlie reported in 2024, and is Charlie still in use?
  • What business return do Pfizer's deployed tools with no published figure deliver, such as Vox, Charlie, field force planning and cross-market promotional review?
  • What does the Golden Batch use case do, and how much of the roughly $600 million of manufacturing optimization savings through 2025 does Pfizer attribute to it?
  • How many AI engineers has Pfizer R&D hired into its functions, and how many AI and data specialists does Pfizer employ overall?
  • What do the Boltz and Chai Discovery agreements cost Pfizer, and have they produced development candidates?
