NBCUniversal applies AI to ad sales, Peacock features and fan guides.
corporate.comcast.comTheir approach to AI
- The platform
- Comcast builds its network AI itself, from the Octave capacity platform to AI chips in FDX nodes, amplifiers and gateways, and buys customer care AI from Google Cloud, Cresta and Sierra; Xfinity Assistant was rebuilt on Google's Agent Development Kit (Apr 2026).
- The models
- Google's Gemini runs Xfinity Assistant and NBCUniversal's OLI Olympics guide, Cresta and Sierra supply care agents, and Comcast runs hundreds of its own marketing models (Apr 2026); Nvidia GPU trials at the network edge test Decart video models and a Personal AI small language model.
- The reach
- Comcast has not said how many of its about 179,000 employees use AI tools; its AI-powered amplifiers were rolling out across all of its markets in Sep 2025, and Xfinity Assistant serves Xfinity customers.
- The catch
- Comcast links AI to fewer service contacts, down about 20% in 2026, but gives no dollar or headcount figure for it, and the billions it expects from its cost transformation, a fourth-quarter charge of more than $1 billion and nearly 1,000 layoffs in WARN notices (Nov 2026) are not credited to AI.

Key findings
Comcast has published no business return it credits to AI: CFO Jason Armstrong said on Oct 22, 2026 that service contact rates fell about 20% and more than 30 million service interactions were removed in 2026 as AI spread through customer experience, but gave no cost saving or headcount figure for either.
Comcast buys its customer care AI: Xfinity Assistant was rebuilt on Google's Agent Development Kit and Gemini (Apr 2026), Cresta now runs an agentic front end for assisted channels, Sierra is to handle agent-to-agent contacts, and Comcast Ventures has invested in both Cresta and Sierra.
Comcast builds its network AI itself: AI-powered amplifiers that monitor and repair themselves were rolling out across all markets in Sep 2025, AI checks 10,000 data points on 30 million network devices every hour, and Comcast began Nvidia GPU trials at its edge sites in Mar 2026.
Comcast started what Jason Armstrong called the largest cost transformation in its history in Sep 2026, expects a fourth-quarter charge of more than $1 billion, and filed WARN notices for nearly 1,000 layoffs by Nov 2, 2026, while saying AI capabilities are central to its new operating model but not crediting the savings or cuts to AI.
NBCUniversal, which Comcast plans to spin off with Sky in about a year from Jun 29, 2026, sold live sports inventory through AI agents for the first time in Jan 2026, plans always-on AI buying agents in its One Platform ad stack, and ran its OLI Olympics guide on Google's Gemini at the Milan Cortina Games.

- Experimenting
Comcast has reported no business return it credits to AI since May 2025. CFO Jason Armstrong said on Oct 22, 2026 that, as AI spread through customer experience, service contact rates fell about 20% and more than 30 million service interactions were removed in 2026, but both are workload measures with no cost or headcount figure; the 20% fewer trouble calls and 35% fewer repair minutes Mike Cavanagh cited on Jan 29, 2026 come from FDX network upgrades with automation and AI combined; and the billions Armstrong expects from Comcast's cost transformation are not credited to AI. Comcast has not reported a company-wide AI rollout with a user count either, and names no single AI owner: CTO Rick Rioboli spoke for the rebuild of Xfinity Assistant on Google's Gemini (Apr 2026) and Chief Network Officer Elad Nafshi speaks for network AI. Comcast is at Experimenting on that in-window work, which includes Cresta and Sierra agents in care and Nvidia GPU trials at the network edge (Mar 2026); a care or network cost saving it credits to AI, or a reported count of employees using AI tools with a named owner, would move it to Piloting.

How they deploy
Build the network AI, buy the care agents
Comcast develops the AI inside its broadband network itself: the Octave platform, which shifts capacity to where traffic spikes, and AI engines in the Broadcom chips of its FDX nodes, amplifiers and gateways, which Elad Nafshi said in Mar 2026 let Comcast run AI deep in its network on embedded neural processing units. For customer care, Jason Armstrong said in Sep 2026 that Comcast looked for the strongest outside partners for care, naming Google, Cresta and Sierra.
AI inside a new operating model
Jason Armstrong said on Oct 22, 2026 that Comcast is speeding up its technology transformation and AI adoption, bringing in new technology leadership, and expanding AI across customer experience with Sierra and Cresta, capabilities he called central to Comcast's new operating model. Mike Cavanagh said in Mar 2026 that Comcast relies on AI agents to work through internal systems and remove the root causes of customer churn.
The network edge as an AI business
Comcast is testing Nvidia GPUs at a subset of about 200 edge data center and compute locations (Mar 2026). Light Reading reported in Oct 2026 that Comcast is investing in its edge of about 1,400 headends to supply partners with compute, space, power and cooling, which Jason Armstrong called a big opportunity though not a major near-term driver. Steve Croney said in May 2026 that Comcast's thousands of edge facilities, hubs and headends let it bring AI closer to customers.
Preparing for consumers' own AI agents
Jason Armstrong said in Oct 2026 that personal AI agents are reshaping how consumers find, buy and manage services, and that Comcast is positioning itself for that shift through differentiation in the bundle and, in wireless, by offering savings an agent would point customers to. Steve Croney said Comcast joined the Personal Agent Protocol group led by Sierra and Meta, which is writing standards for how personal agents deal with businesses.
NBCUniversal: AI in ad sales and fan products
NBCUniversal's AI work centers on advertising and audience products. Matt Strauss said in Sep 2026 that NBCUniversal wants to use AI to scan content and place contextual ads, such as a pizza ad after a family dinner scene, and to build personalized playlists from the Bravo library. NBCUniversal said in May 2026 that orchestrated AI agents will automate ad transactions inside its One Platform stack.
- Deployment model
- Comcast runs most of its AI inside Connectivity & Platforms, the segment led by CEO Steve Croney that includes Xfinity, Comcast Business and Sky. Charlie Herrin's Technology & Product organization designs and delivers products and runs the network, and in Jan 2022 both CTO Rick Rioboli and Chief Network Officer Elad Nafshi reported to Herrin; Comcast has not published the current lines. Customer experience works with outside agent vendors (Google, Cresta and Sierra), supported by Comcast's own personalized data models and offer recommendation engine (Oct 2026). NBCUniversal runs its own AI in advertising, Peacock and fan products, and Comcast plans to spin NBCUniversal and Sky off into a separate public company in about a year from Jun 29, 2026.
- Model providers
- Comcast rebuilt Xfinity Assistant on Google's Agent Development Kit and Agent Runtime with Gemini models (Apr 2026), and NBCUniversal's OLI Olympics guide was powered by Google Cloud's Gemini for the 2026 Winter Games. Cresta supplies an agentic front end for assisted care channels and Sierra is to handle agent-to-agent interactions (Oct 2026); Comcast has not said which models those vendors run for it. Comcast's own models include hundreds of marketing models with thousands of attributes for acquisition, upsell, win-back and retention (Apr 2026). The Nvidia edge trials test an ad engine on Decart real-time video models and a small business front-desk agent on Personal AI's small language model running on HPE ProLiant servers (Mar 2026).
- Data and infrastructure
- Comcast's AI runs in 3 places. Inside its own network, Broadcom DOCSIS 4.0 chips with AI engines sit in nodes, amplifiers and modems, Project Genesis had virtualized more than 50% of the footprint by Sep 2025, and Mike Cavanagh said in Jan 2026 that about 60% had moved to mid-split spectrum and a virtualized architecture. At its own edge, Comcast has about 200 edge data center and compute locations that could host Nvidia GPUs and says it has enough power there for AI workloads (Mar 2026). In public cloud, Xfinity Assistant's agents run on Google's Agent Runtime, and AWS has been Comcast's preferred public cloud since Jan 2018 and has hosted its 5G wireless core since Dec 2024. Comcast has not said where Cresta and Sierra process its customer data.

Adoption
Comcast spread AI first through its network, with Octave from the early pandemic, an AI-enabled chipset announced with Broadcom in Oct 2023 and AI-powered amplifiers rolling out across all markets from Sep 2025, and then into customer care, where Xfinity Assistant was rebuilt on Gemini by Apr 2026 and Cresta and Sierra agents arrived in 2026. Comcast has published no count of employees who use AI tools: Bill Strahan described internal training for employees and leaders in Mar 2026 without figures, and Comcast's filings and calls give no user numbers. Customer-facing reach is the clearer measure, with AI checking 30 million network devices every hour (Sep 2025) and Comcast reporting about 20% fewer service contacts in 2026.

Economics & controls
Spend and ROI
Technology budget
Comcast does not publish a technology budget or a figure for AI spending. Comcast's 2025 Form 10-K says its success depends on adopting and using technologies such as AI and that it will keep incurring costs for technology initiatives such as multi-gigabit DOCSIS 4.0 speeds. Comcast reported $123.7 billion of revenue in 2025, flat on 2024.
Reported ROI
Comcast has reported no return in revenue, cost or headcount that it credits to AI. Jason Armstrong said on Oct 22, 2026 that AI is embedded across the network and expanding in customer experience, and that Comcast had already reduced service contact rates by roughly 20% and removed more than 30 million service interactions in 2026 against 2025, but gave no cost saving for either. Mike Cavanagh said in Jan 2026 that greater automation and AI in the network, with FDX upgrades, cut trouble calls 20% and repair minutes 35% where deployed, without separating AI's effect.
Cost transformation and headcount
Jason Armstrong said on Sep 9, 2026 that Comcast had begun the largest cost transformation in its history, worth billions of dollars, by removing management layers and redesigning processes, and on Oct 22, 2026 he put the fourth-quarter charge for it at over $1 billion; New Street Research estimated about $3 billion of cost cuts. WARN notices filed by Nov 2, 2026 cover 634 jobs in Philadelphia, 159 in Washington, 119 in New Jersey and 82 in California, while Comcast says it is adding more than 1,100 positions. Comcast's WARN statement speaks of a more agile company and does not mention AI. Comcast had about 179,000 employees at the end of 2025.
Investments in AI vendors
Comcast Ventures took part in Cresta's $125 million Series D and Sierra's $175 million Series C funding rounds, according to CX Dive (Oct 2026), so Comcast is both a customer and an investor in its 2 main customer care AI vendors.
The separation
Comcast announced on Jun 29, 2026 that it will spin off NBCUniversal and Sky into a separate public company in about a year. Mike Cavanagh will run NBCUniversal and Michael Angelakis will become CEO of Comcast, which keeps broadband, wireless and business services and most of the AI work in its network and customer care.
Governance and risk
Board oversight
Comcast's Governance and Corporate Responsibility Committee reviews significant legal and regulatory compliance risks, including privacy, artificial intelligence and data governance, according to the 2026 proxy statement.
Disclosed risks
Comcast's 2025 Form 10-K lists risks from AI that can rapidly produce large volumes of content competing with its media businesses, uncertain law on protecting its content from generative AI developers, threat actors using AI to get around security controls, and regulators applying existing laws in new ways to AI.
Grounded customer agents
Rick Rioboli said in Apr 2026 that Xfinity Assistant's multi-agent architecture keeps interactions secure and grounded in Gemini. Steve Croney said in Oct 2026 that the Personal Agent Protocol group Comcast joined is writing standards that give visibility and control when personal agents deal with businesses.
Generative AI in production work
NBCUniversal requires prior written approval from the studio before production staff use generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Llama, MidJourney or DALL-E, and can refuse a request if the use might affect the copyrightability of the production, under a policy dated Mar 2025.
Data in ad targeting
Comcast says the AI ad engine in its Nvidia edge trials tailors ads to households using content preferences, household size and other non-sensitive demographic categories (Mar 2026).

- Comcast has not said how many of its about 179,000 employees use AI tools; its AI-powered amplifiers were rolling out across all of its markets in Sep 2025, and Xfinity Assistant serves Xfinity customers.
- What return has Comcast reported from AI?
- Comcast has reported no business return it credits to AI since May 2025.
Open questions
- What cost saving does Comcast get from the roughly 20% fall in service contact rates and the more than 30 million interactions removed in 2026, and how much of it comes from Xfinity Assistant, Cresta and Sierra rather than simpler pricing and processes?
- How many of Comcast's about 179,000 employees use AI tools at work, and which tools has it licensed for them?
- Who owns AI across Comcast, given that no chief AI officer appears on its leadership page, and is Rick Rioboli still CTO after Jason Armstrong said in Oct 2026 that Comcast is bringing in new technology leadership?
- How much of the billions Comcast expects from its cost transformation, and how many of the nearly 1,000 layoffs in WARN notices, come from AI replacing work?
- What do the network AI tools return in avoided truck rolls, repair cost or outage minutes, separated from the FDX upgrades?
- Which models do Cresta and Sierra run for Comcast, and where is Comcast's customer data processed and stored?
- What did the Nvidia edge trials show, and when, if at all, will Comcast sell AI compute at its edge sites?
- How will AI teams, data and vendor contracts be split between Comcast and NBCUniversal when the separation closes?
- What share of NBCUniversal's ad sales now runs through AI buying agents, and with what effect on revenue or sales cost?
