intuit.comTheir approach to AI
- The platform
- Intuit runs its AI work on GenOS, a generative AI operating system it announced in Jun 2023: GenStudio for testing models, GenRuntime for grounding them in Intuit data, GenUX components, GenSRF guardrails and, since Jun 2025, an Agent Starter Kit for building agents.
- The models
- Intuit uses its own financial language models, built from open-source models, beside commercial models from OpenAI (a contract worth more than $100 million, Nov 2025), Anthropic and Amazon; Alex Balazs said in Sep 2026 that Intuit has integrated more than 60 large language models.
- The reach
- Ivan Lazarov said in Dec 2025 that a majority of Intuit's workforce uses AI tools such as ChatGPT Enterprise, Gemini and Glean on a regular basis; Intuit has published no user count, and Claude Code has been deployed across engineering since Feb 2026.
- The catch
- Intuit's only return credited to AI in the last 18 months is engineering output; its dollar efficiency figures are a Mar 2025 run-rate and a fiscal 2026 expectation credited to AI and automation together, and Sasan Goodarzi said the May 2026 cut of 17% of staff was not about AI.

Key findings
Intuit credits generative AI tools with 40% faster average coding and 39% more code delivered per developer, Ashok Srivastava told Fortune in Dec 2025, and Alex Balazs said at the Sep 2026 Investor Day that 70% of Intuit's code pull requests were delivered by AI.
Intuit built its own generative AI platform, GenOS, announced in Jun 2023, with its own financial language models; more than 900 Intuit technologists downloaded its Agent Starter Kit at a spring 2025 hackathon and built hundreds of agents within 5 weeks.
Intuit signed a multi-year contract worth more than $100 million with OpenAI in Nov 2025 that covers ChatGPT Enterprise for employees, and in Feb 2026 said it was deploying Anthropic's Claude Code across its engineering organization.
Sandeep Aujla said in Mar 2025 that AI was on track to deliver nearly $90 million of annualized efficiencies in fiscal 2025, and Intuit's Sep 2025 Investor Day expected $135 million or more in fiscal 2026 from AI and automation together; Intuit has published no realized figure since.
Intuit announced in May 2026 that it would cut about 17% of its full-time workforce, about 3,000 roles, at an estimated cost of $315 million, and Sasan Goodarzi told analysts the cut had nothing to do with AI.
Where Intuit sits
- Stage
- Piloting
Intuit has reported one return it credits to AI in the last 18 months, which places it in Piloting: Ashok Srivastava told Fortune in Dec 2025 that generative AI tools gave Intuit's technology teams 40% faster average coding and 39% more code delivered per developer, figures Ivan Lazarov also gave Bain that month, and Alex Balazs said at the Sep 2026 Investor Day that coding velocity rose 40% in the first 90 days of Intuit's product-development overhaul. Intuit's other internal figures do not qualify: AI-resolved support chats and TurboTax experts spending about 20% less time per return measure workload and time, the nearly $90 million of annualized efficiencies Sandeep Aujla cited in Mar 2025 predates the window and was a run-rate during the year, and the $135 million or more expected for fiscal 2026 was a forecast credited to AI and automation together. On rollout, Intuit says a majority of its workforce uses AI tools but has published no user count. Intuit falls short of Scaling because it has no AI-credited return in a second function and no firm-level AI figure: its earnings calls cite continued AI efficiencies without an amount, and Sasan Goodarzi said the May 2026 workforce cut had nothing to do with AI.

How they deploy
One platform for every builder
Intuit builds AI on GenOS, a generative AI operating system it announced in Jun 2023 so its developers could use one set of tools, data and guardrails. Intuit's Jun 2025 release added an Agent Starter Kit, planning and reasoning services and prompt translation across models, and said thousands of Intuit technologists use GenOS to design, build and deploy agents. Intuit reported that more than 900 technologists downloaded the kit during its spring 2025 Global Engineering Days and built hundreds of agents within 5 weeks.
AI-native software development
Intuit has moved its engineers toward AI-written code. Intuit's engineering teams found that off-the-shelf coding assistants did not know Intuit's APIs and standards, so Intuit built curated golden repositories that feed Intuit context into code generation from any vendor, according to an Intuit engineering case study summarized by ZenML. Intuit announced in Feb 2026 that it was deploying Anthropic's Claude Code across its engineering organization, and Alex Balazs said in Sep 2026 that 70% of Intuit's code pull requests were delivered by AI.
AI agents paired with human experts
Intuit pairs AI with its network of thousands of AI-enabled tax and bookkeeping experts, and its FY2026 Form 10-K says AI agents are embedded in Intuit's customer success operations to triage issues, automate routine tasks and surface insights beside human experts. Sasan Goodarzi said in May 2025 that AI cut the time TurboTax experts spent preparing a full-service return by about 20%. Sandeep Aujla said in Mar 2025 that Intuit pays its experts by the hour, so automating their tasks goes straight to profit.
AI in every function
Intuit runs an initiative called How Intuit Works, led by Ivan Lazarov, Vice President of Technology, to redesign work across functions with AI. Lazarov told Bain in Dec 2025 that a center of excellence with dedicated staff uses a Bain playbook to pick the roles with the most to gain, that People and Places, business operations, marketing, finance and legal teams received hands-on training, and that nontechnical staff have been given AI code-assist tools.
Model choice, data kept on Intuit's platform
Intuit treats commercial language models as interchangeable parts behind its own data and models. Sandeep Aujla said in Mar 2025 that language models are going to be the fastest depreciating assets, and Sasan Goodarzi said in Feb 2026 that most of Intuit's AI capability is knowledge engineering and machine learning, with Intuit's own financial language models and human experts on top. Intuit says no customer data or domain expertise is shared with OpenAI or Anthropic under its partnerships.
- Deployment model
- Intuit's AI work sits in its technology organization, led by Alex Balazs, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, who oversees product and platform engineering, data science, information technology and information security. Ashok Srivastava, Senior Vice President and Chief AI Officer since summer 2025, merged the AI unit with Intuit's futures team into Intuit Foresight, a few hundred AI scientists, engineers and product managers in the US, Israel and India who build models and capabilities that Intuit's developers then ship. Ivan Lazarov's How Intuit Works initiative and its center of excellence carry AI into non-engineering functions, with functional leaders accountable for results, and the customer success organization under Sarah Kim, Executive Vice President and Chief Customer Success Officer, runs the AI agents in Intuit's support operations.
- Model providers
- Intuit uses its own financial large language models, which Ashok Srivastava's team built from open-source models for accuracy at low latency (Dec 2025), alongside commercial models in GenOS's GenStudio catalog. OpenAI is the largest named provider: Intuit has used OpenAI models in GenOS since 2023 and signed a multi-year contract worth more than $100 million in Nov 2025 to deepen its use of OpenAI's frontier models and keep ChatGPT Enterprise for employees. Intuit used Anthropic's Claude through Amazon Bedrock for TurboTax tax explanations in the 2024 tax season and is deploying Claude Code across engineering (Feb 2026); Intuit's TurboTax team used Claude to translate the 2025 tax law into Intuit's proprietary tax language. GenStudio added Amazon Nova through Amazon Bedrock in Jun 2025, employees also use Google's Gemini and Glean (Dec 2025), and Alex Balazs said in Sep 2026 that Intuit has integrated more than 60 large language models.
- Data and infrastructure
- Intuit uses public cloud providers, such as Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform, for most of the systems, networks and databases behind its online offerings, and relies primarily on 2 third-party public cloud providers for hosting (FY2026 Form 10-K). AWS says Intuit has used it since 2013, describes an all-in cloud approach, and lists Intuit's use of Amazon SageMaker to fine-tune foundation models, Amazon Bedrock for Claude, and Amazon Connect for its customer contact center. AWS said in Jun 2025 that Intuit integrates GenOS with AWS native services. Intuit does not name a data center of its own for AI, and has not said where the OpenAI models in its contract or Claude Code run. Intuit holds 580,000 customer and financial attributes per small business and 60,000 per consumer, and runs 60 billion machine learning predictions a day (Jun 2025).

Economics & controls
Spend and ROI
Technology spending
Intuit does not disclose a technology or AI budget. Intuit spent $3.38 billion on research and development in fiscal 2026, which ended Jul 31, 2026, 16% of its $21.4 billion revenue, up from $2.93 billion in fiscal 2025 (FY2026 Form 10-K), and says future research and development will focus on AI-enabled done-for-you experiences.
What AI itself costs
Intuit's largest disclosed AI commitment is its Nov 2025 multi-year contract with OpenAI, worth more than $100 million, which covers OpenAI models for Intuit's agents and ChatGPT Enterprise for employees. Sandeep Aujla said in Feb 2026 that Intuit's agent costs are minimal and mostly usage-based, and that automation efficiencies help offset its AI investment. Intuit has not disclosed what it pays Anthropic, Google, Glean or AWS for AI.
Reported ROI
Intuit's one recent return credited to AI is in engineering: generative AI tools gave 40% faster average coding and 39% more code delivered per developer (Dec 2025). Intuit's dollar figures do not meet that bar: Sandeep Aujla said in Mar 2025 that AI was on track for nearly $90 million of annualized efficiencies in fiscal 2025, and Intuit's Sep 2025 Investor Day expected $135 million or more in fiscal 2026 from AI and automation together, according to Quartr's summary; Intuit has not reported a realized fiscal 2026 figure. Intuit's fiscal 2026 earnings calls credited earnings growth partly to continued AI efficiencies without an amount, and its fiscal 2027 outlook expects margin expansion from the 2026 workforce changes and efficiency gains in how Intuit serves customers and works.
Productivity markers
Intuit reports most internal gains as time or volume. Alex Balazs said in Sep 2026 that coding velocity rose 40% with 31% fewer failures in the first 90 days of Intuit's product-development overhaul and that Intuit was on pace to double development velocity, Intuit reported in Sep 2025 that AI cut incident resolution time by 69% and resolved 84% of product support chats, TurboTax full-service experts spent about 20% less time per return (May 2025), and Intuit's tax team moved law parsing from weeks to hours (Apr 2026). Intuit has not converted these into cost or headcount figures.
Headcount
Intuit announced on May 20, 2026 that it would cut its full-time workforce by about 17%, about 3,000 of roughly 18,200 employees, close sites in Reno and Woodland Hills, and remove management layers and coordination-heavy roles; Intuit estimates the plan's cost at $315 million and recorded $293 million in fiscal 2026. Sasan Goodarzi told analysts that none of the cut had to do with AI, and Sandeep Aujla framed it around velocity and fewer management layers. Intuit reported about 18,600 employees on Jul 31, 2026 (FY2026 Form 10-K), and cut about 1,800 roles in 2024.
Governance and risk
Responsible AI principles and GenSRF
Intuit says it builds its AI under responsible AI principles covering fairness, accountability, transparency, privacy and security, and it is a member of the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute Consortium set up by NIST. Intuit's GenOS includes GenSRF, guardrails against prompt injection and data leakage, and Intuit said in Jun 2025 that it was extending GenSRF with controls for the specific risks of AI agents.
Data stays on Intuit's platform
Intuit says customer data stays on its platform under its partnerships with OpenAI and Anthropic. Sandeep Aujla said in Nov 2025 that the data is the customer's and remains on Intuit's platform, and Intuit told investors in Feb 2026 that no data or domain expertise is shared with model providers, with protection by contract and architecture.
Human experts and deterministic checks
Intuit keeps human experts in the loop for regulated work. Intuit's TurboTax team validates AI-generated tax code with LLM-based evaluation tools and human tax experts, Sarah Aerni said in Apr 2026 that the tax engine must give deterministic, test-verified results, and Intuit's AI-enabled experts review, sign and take accountability for assisted tax returns.
Disclosed risks
Intuit's FY2026 Form 10-K lists its ability to develop, deploy and use AI among its risk factors, notes that its online services depend on third-party cloud services and large language models without full redundancy, and warns that new AI laws may impose costs or limit its use of AI. Intuit's cybersecurity team of about 550 professionals is led by its Chief Information Security and Fraud Prevention Officer, who also serves as Chief Information Officer.

- How does Intuit deploy AI?
- Intuit deploys AI internally on GenOS, the generative AI platform it built in 2023, which gives its developers Intuit's own financial language models alongside commercial models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Amazon. Intuit engineers use AI coding tools, including Anthropic's Claude Code since Feb 2026, and Intuit credits generative AI with 39% more code delivered per developer (Dec 2025). Employees use ChatGPT Enterprise, Gemini and Glean, and AI agents triage support work beside thousands of AI-enabled tax and bookkeeping experts.
- What does Intuit use AI for?
- Intuit has not published a count of its internal AI use cases; Intuit says its technologies produced 3,500 generative AI use cases inside and outside the company in fiscal 2025. Intuit has published one business return it credits to AI in its own operations: generative AI tools gave 39% more code delivered per developer (Dec 2025). Intuit reports its support, expert and tax-code gains as workload or time, and has published no firm-level figure for its internal AI in the last 18 months; its earnings calls cite continued AI efficiencies without an amount.
- Who leads AI at Intuit?
- AI at Intuit is led by Alex Balazs (Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer); Ashok Srivastava (Senior Vice President and Chief AI Officer); Ivan Lazarov (Vice President of Technology, How Intuit Works). Ownership of AI on the org chart: Chief AI Officer Ashok Srivastava (Intuit Foresight); CTO Alex Balazs runs technology, data science, IT and security.
- What AI platform does Intuit use?
- Intuit runs its AI work on GenOS, a generative AI operating system it announced in Jun 2023: GenStudio for testing models, GenRuntime for grounding them in Intuit data, GenUX components, GenSRF guardrails and, since Jun 2025, an Agent Starter Kit for building agents.
- Which AI models does Intuit use?
- Intuit uses its own financial language models, built from open-source models, beside commercial models from OpenAI (a contract worth more than $100 million, Nov 2025), Anthropic and Amazon; Alex Balazs said in Sep 2026 that Intuit has integrated more than 60 large language models.
- How many Intuit employees use AI?
- Ivan Lazarov said in Dec 2025 that a majority of Intuit's workforce uses AI tools such as ChatGPT Enterprise, Gemini and Glean on a regular basis; Intuit has published no user count, and Claude Code has been deployed across engineering since Feb 2026.
- What return has Intuit reported from AI?
- Intuit has reported one return it credits to AI in the last 18 months, which places it in Piloting: Ashok Srivastava told Fortune in Dec 2025 that generative AI tools gave Intuit's technology teams 40% faster average coding and 39% more code delivered per developer, figures Ivan Lazarov also gave Bain that month, and Alex Balazs said at the Sep 2026 Investor Day that coding velocity rose 40% in the first 90 days of Intuit's product-development overhaul.
Open questions
- What did Intuit's internal AI save in fiscal 2026, against the $135 million or more of efficiencies from AI and automation it expected at its Sep 2025 Investor Day, and how much of that was AI rather than other automation?
- Did the nearly $90 million of annualized efficiencies Sandeep Aujla cited in Mar 2025 materialize for the full fiscal 2025, and in which functions?
- Has the 39% gain in code delivered per developer turned into more features shipped, lower engineering cost or slower hiring, and how does Intuit measure development velocity?
- What return does Intuit earn from AI in customer success, given that AI resolved 84% of product support chats (Sep 2025), and has it reduced support staffing or outsourcing?
- How many Intuit employees use AI tools each week, given that the only published measure is a majority of the workforce (Dec 2025)?
- Where do the OpenAI models in Intuit's Nov 2025 contract and Claude Code run, and what does Intuit pay Anthropic, Google and Glean?
- Why did Intuit report about 18,600 employees on Jul 31, 2026, more than the roughly 18,200 a year earlier, while cutting about 17% of its full-time workforce, and what will headcount be once the plan is complete?
- Where does Ashok Srivastava's Intuit Foresight team report, and how do the Chief AI Officer and the Chief Technology Officer divide ownership of AI?
