Key findings
Iberdrola has published no cost, revenue or headcount figure it credits to AI: its Jul 22, 2026 half-year results name AI-linked process improvements among the drivers of more than 8% adjusted net profit growth in 2026 without quantifying them.
Iberdrola reported more than 150 AI use cases at its Jun 2025 Digital Summit, more than 300 AI projects underway in Jun 2026 and more than 450 projects in Jul 2026, and nearly 500 AI agents deployed or in development by Aug 2026; Iberdrola uses different measures for each count.
Iberdrola chose AWS as its preferred cloud for generative AI workloads in Aug 2024 and runs its agents on Amazon Bedrock AgentCore with Anthropic Claude and Amazon Nova models, while a Dec 2025 agreement with Microsoft expands Azure and Microsoft Copilot across the group.
Iberdrola certified AI management systems under ISO/IEC 42001 in Spain in Feb 2025, certified its GURIA assistant as a global process in Dec 2025, and says its group AI management system was certified in 2026.
Iberdrola has not said how many of its 45,400 employees use Microsoft Copilot or any other AI tool, and has not disclosed what AI itself costs or how many people work on it.
Where Iberdrola sits
- Stage
- Experimenting
Iberdrola has reported no business return it credits to AI since May 2025, for any use case or for the group: its Jul 2026 half-year results list AI-linked process improvements and efficiency gains from digitalisation and AI among the drivers of 2026 profit growth without a figure, the GregorIA and GURIA tools are described by time and quality gains with no cost equivalent, and the one percentage it published, a 75% cut in inspection response times and operating costs on Brazilian transmission lines (Feb 2026), is credited to drones and AI together. Iberdrola has not reported a company-wide AI rollout with a user count either: it counts more than 450 AI projects (Jul 2026) and nearly 500 agents deployed or in development (Aug 2026), and has adopted Microsoft Copilot, but has not said how many of its 45,400 employees use any AI tool. Iberdrola stays at Experimenting despite that volume of AI work; one return it credits to AI, or an official count of employees using its AI tools with a named owner, would move it to Piloting.

How they deploy
People keep the decisions
Iberdrola describes its goal as becoming the AI Utility of the Future, combining employees' expertise with AI tools that give access to knowledge, automate repetitive tasks and recommend actions (Aug 2026). Iberdrola says it adopts these capabilities progressively and always keeps people in control of and responsible for decisions, an approach it applies to network operations, renewable plants and customer service.
One central centre, hybrid teams
Sergio Merchán, Iberdrola's global CIO, said in Jul 2025 that the AI Centre of Excellence, running since Sep 2022, follows a centralized model: one hub with common standards, closely tied to the businesses. Each Iberdrola initiative starts with hybrid teams of the centre's data scientists, AI engineers and cloud architects plus business staff, and the centre also provides governance, standards and responsible AI support.
2 clouds, 2 roles
Iberdrola selected AWS as its preferred cloud provider for generative AI workloads in Aug 2024 and builds its own applications and agents on Amazon Bedrock. Iberdrola's Dec 2025 agreement with Microsoft covers wider use of the Azure cloud, where critical systems from several business areas already run, plus the deployment of Microsoft Copilot and security and compliance tools across the group.
From use cases to agents
An Iberdrola AI engineer said in Feb 2026 that Iberdrola was extending its production AI platform with agents on Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, and in Jun 2026 that it had built its first corporate agent platforms with AWS and Microsoft. By Aug 2026 Iberdrola counted nearly 500 AI agents deployed or in development across networks, generation, customers, corporate functions and IT.
AI in the financial guidance
Iberdrola's Q1 2026 results presentation listed AI-driven process transformation under operational efficiency, and its Jul 2026 half-year results named AI-linked process improvements among the drivers of 2026 profit growth. Ignacio Galán wrote in Apr 2026 that electrification and AI open new growth opportunities for Iberdrola, and that rising energy demand together with AI-driven process transformation, with 300 projects underway, will raise investment needs, with electricity networks the main beneficiaries.
- Deployment model
- Iberdrola runs AI from a central AI Centre of Excellence inside its IT organization, led by Global Head of AI & Data Xabier Muruaga under Global CIO Sergio Merchán, which sets the platforms, standards and AI governance framework, while use cases are built with the businesses in Spain, the UK, the US and Brazil. Iberdrola's subsidiaries add their own teams: Avangrid in the US launched a Data Science and Analytics team in Aug 2023 and has a Chief Data & AI Officer role, and ScottishPower runs an AI training program for its workforce. Iberdrola says it trains employees so they can find and build their own use cases for specific business problems (Aug 2026).
- Model providers
- Iberdrola's generative AI platform on Amazon Bedrock gives its workforce a choice of leading foundation models (Aug 2024). Iberdrola's IT operations agents reach Anthropic Claude and Amazon Nova models through Amazon Bedrock and other models through a LiteLLM proxy, so agents can switch models without code changes, with Amazon Bedrock Guardrails on model outputs (Feb 2026). Employees use Microsoft Copilot, which Iberdrola adopted as generative AI entered its workplace over the 3 years to Oct 2025 and agreed to deploy further in Dec 2025. Iberdrola has not published which models run behind its customer voicebots and chatbots or whether it fine-tunes any model on its own data.
- Data and infrastructure
- Iberdrola's AI runs on 2 public clouds. On AWS, Iberdrola uses Amazon Bedrock, SageMaker and Bedrock AgentCore, with agents deployed in a virtual private cloud so they reach internal data without exposing traffic to the internet, and AWS Professional Services was to build a renewables data lake covering more than 400 sites (Aug 2024). On Microsoft Azure, Iberdrola has migrated critical systems from several business areas and will use Microsoft's data and AI products (Dec 2025). Iberdrola has not disclosed any AI inference in its own data centers.

Economics & controls
Spend and ROI
Technology budget
Iberdrola does not publish a technology or IT budget. Iberdrola invested €425.4 million in R&D in 2025, up from €402.5 million in 2024, and reaffirmed in Jun 2026 a plan to invest €1.6 billion in R&D&i from 2025 to 2028, aimed at electrification and the digitalisation of its businesses (Integrated Report, Mar 2026; Digital Summit, Jun 2026).
What AI itself costs
Iberdrola has not disclosed what it spends on AI, on models or on Copilot licences, or how its AI work is funded within the €1.6 billion R&D&i plan. Iberdrola's Dec 2025 Microsoft agreement and its AWS partnership carry no published contract values.
Reported ROI
Iberdrola has reported no return it credits to AI. Iberdrola's Q1 2026 results presentation listed AI-driven process transformation under operational efficiency, and its Jul 22, 2026 half-year results named AI-linked process improvements, and efficiency gains from digitalisation and AI, among the drivers of more than 8% adjusted net profit growth in 2026, without a figure. Iberdrola's Oct 21, 2026 9-month results raised that guidance to at least 10% and did not mention AI.
Productivity markers
Iberdrola describes its named AI tools by speed and quality, not cost: GregorIA greatly reduced the time to analyse complaints (Feb 2025), GURIA aims at faster responses in employee support (Mar 2026), and the IT operations agents cut manual resubmissions and processing times (Feb 2026). Iberdrola's 2025 annual report says drones and AI cut inspection response times and operating costs on Brazilian transmission lines by 75%, without separating AI's share.
Headcount

Governance and risk
Board-approved AI policy
Iberdrola's Board approved a Policy for the Development and Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools, which by Jun 2025 had been in place for about a year and includes a register of AI models and solutions with risk assessments. Iberdrola's governance model covers risk management, human oversight, transparency and regulatory compliance across the life cycle of AI systems (Jul 2026).
ISO/IEC 42001 certification
Iberdrola Clientes and Iberdrola Energía España were the first companies to certify AI management systems under ISO/IEC 42001 with AENOR in Feb 2025. Iberdrola's Global Business Services division certified GURIA as a global process in Dec 2025, and Iberdrola says its AI management system was certified in 2026, calling itself the first energy group with an AI system certified under the standard (Jun 2026).
EU AI Act readiness
Iberdrola joined the European Commission's AI Pact in Sep 2024, the first European energy company to do so, and says it has adopted measures ahead of the EU AI Act's deadlines (Jun 2025).
Controls on agents
Iberdrola's AgentCore agents run inside a virtual private cloud, authenticate through Microsoft Entra ID with OAuth 2.0, pass model outputs through Amazon Bedrock Guardrails and log every trace to a self-hosted Langfuse instance (Feb 2026). Iberdrola says people keep control of and responsibility for decisions as it adds agents (Aug 2026).
Disclosed risks
Iberdrola's 2025 annual report lists the adoption of new technologies such as AI among its technology risks, alongside cybersecurity and data protection compliance, and says the group has specific policies for them.

- What cost, revenue or headcount effect does Iberdrola attribute to AI, given that its 2026 guidance counts AI-linked process improvements as a driver of profit growth without a figure?
- How many of Iberdrola's 45,400 employees use Microsoft Copilot or the Bedrock platform each week, and how many Copilot licences has it bought?
- How many of Iberdrola's nearly 500 AI agents are live in production, and how many of its more than 450 projects are pilots?
- What do GregorIA, GURIA and the IT operations agents save in cost or staff time, and how much of the 75% fall in Brazilian line inspection costs comes from AI rather than drones?
- What does Iberdrola spend on AI, including models, Copilot licences and the AI Centre of Excellence, and how large is its AI and data workforce?
- Who does Global CIO Sergio Merchán report to, and does any member of Iberdrola's executive team own AI directly?
- Which models sit behind Iberdrola's customer voicebots and chatbots, and does Iberdrola fine-tune any model on its own data?
- What does the AI Centric global platform cover, and when will it replace or join the existing Bedrock platform?
