bp.comTheir approach to AI
- The platform
- BP builds its own AI tools, such as Optimization Genie, the Wells Assistant and PlantPulse, has used Palantir Foundry since 2014 and added Palantir's AIP in a five-year deal in Sep 2024, and set out in Aug 2025 to merge about 100,000 data pipelines into one platform with Databricks and Palantir by mid-2026.
- The models
- BP has not named the models behind its in-house tools; it said in Jul 2025 that the Wells Assistant uses frontier large language models, and employees use Copilot for Microsoft 365, where BP was a launch partner in Nov 2023, and generative AI inside Palantir Foundry (Oct 2025).
- The reach
- BP has published no company-wide count of AI users; its wells and subsurface AI assistants were available to more than 2,000 users in Jul 2025, and Emeka Emembolu said in Oct 2025 that many BP teams use generative AI daily.
- The catch
- BP publishes no AI budget and no AI-specific return; digital savings sit inside structural cost reductions of $4 billion by Oct 2026, and BP has not said how much came from AI.

Key findings
Emeka Emembolu, BP's EVP Technology, said in Oct 2025 that many BP teams use generative AI daily through Palantir Foundry or Microsoft Copilot, that more than 95% of BP's data sits in the cloud, and that his priorities are AI for every employee and a unified data platform built with Databricks and Palantir.
BP told investors in Feb 2025 that AI and advanced analytics, with surveillance and real-time monitoring, helped raise BP-operated production by about 4% from 2022 to 2024 and protect about 10% more from going offline; in Jul 2026 BP said new tools had helped add about 2% a year for five years, around 20,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day.
BP has published returns for three named AI tools: Optimization Genie added about 2,000 barrels a day at the Atlantis hub (Apr 2025), an AI stock replenishment system for UK stores cut inventory by about $5 million (Jan 2026), and an AI agent trial at Aral stations in Germany raised sales and cut food waste (Nov 2025).
BP has worked with Palantir since 2014, signed a five-year deal in Sep 2024 that added Palantir's AIP software for large language models, and said in Aug 2025 that it was merging about 100,000 data pipelines into one platform with Databricks and Palantir, a job Emeka Emembolu said could normally take five years and Murray Auchincloss expected around mid-2026.
Meg O'Neill became BP's chief executive on Apr 1, 2026, split BP into Upstream and Downstream from Jul 1, 2026, and said in Aug 2026 that technology, simplification and organisational redesign are how BP becomes more competitive; BP sets out longer-term plans on Dec 15, 2026.
Where BP sits
- Stage
- Scaling
BP sits at Scaling: EVP Technology Emeka Emembolu, a member of the leadership team, owns digital and AI; BP runs AI in production across wells, production optimization, maintenance, seismic imaging and UK store replenishment; and its executives report results on earnings calls, such as the record upstream plant reliability Murray Auchincloss credited partly to AI in Nov 2025. BP's reach rests on statements rather than counts: it was a launch partner for Copilot for Microsoft 365 in Nov 2023 and says many teams use generative AI daily. BP falls short of Embedded because it has published no weekly use by most of its 93,700 employees and no AI-specific financial return.

How they deploy
Data foundations first
BP treats data as the precondition for AI. Emeka Emembolu said in Aug 2025 that BP was running about 100,000 data pipelines, which cost more than they should and kept teams from using AI consistently, and that BP would replace them with one unified data platform built with Databricks and Palantir in under two years instead of the five such a project usually takes. Murray Auchincloss said in Nov 2025 that the platform would span upstream, downstream, trading and finance by around mid-2026, so that AI and large language models can run against all of BP's data.
Build on Palantir, buy the assistant
BP has worked with Palantir since 2014, starting in the upstream with data structure and linear programming before moving into AI, and signed a five-year deal in Sep 2024 that added Palantir's AIP software so BP staff can use large language models on that data. BP also builds its own tools: its digital technology team built the Wells Assistant, and bpx energy builds tools with the field staff who use them. For general office work BP bought Microsoft's Copilot for Microsoft 365 as a launch partner in Nov 2023, and Emeka Emembolu said in Oct 2025 that many teams use generative AI daily in Palantir Foundry or Copilot.
AI as a production and cost lever
BP's Feb 2025 reset strategy counts the deployment of digital and technology solutions among its structural cost reductions, and BP presented AI and advanced analytics as a source of extra oil and gas production. Emeka Emembolu said in Aug 2025 that the technology organisation was cutting its own staff, contractors and applications and narrowing to a small set of technology partners, while Palantir and BP's own AI systems were used to review contractor roles and check invoices for value leakage.
From pilots to core operations
Emeka Emembolu said in Oct 2025 that BP was moving past pilots and small experiments to deploy AI at scale in its core infrastructure, with the aim that every operational decision is informed by trusted, real-time data and enhanced by AI. Emembolu gave predicting which fuel pumps across more than 13,000 BP stations are about to fail as an example of what the data foundation could make possible.
A new chief executive's agenda
Meg O'Neill, BP's chief executive since Apr 1, 2026, said in Aug 2026 that BP's cost interventions had not delivered sufficient savings to the bottom line and that technology, simplification and organisational redesign are the way to a more competitive BP. Meg O'Neill pointed in Oct 2026 to bpx energy, where field staff armed with data and AI tools raised production uptime, as the culture BP wants across the company.
- Deployment model
- BP runs AI from a central technology function with delivery in the businesses. The EVP Technology, Emeka Emembolu, leads digital, safety, security and science, and the technology team builds shared data platforms and tools such as the Wells Assistant; under the reorganization effective Jul 1, 2026 the Technology function also houses BP's solar and offshore wind businesses and is reported in Other Businesses & Corporate. Business units build and pilot their own tools on the shared platforms: the Gulf of America region deployed PlantPulse (Sep 2026), and bpx energy, BP's US onshore business, designs AI programs with the field staff closest to the work (Jan 2026). BP also runs a Digital Hub in Pune, India, opened in 2021, and bp Technical Solutions India, planned at more than 400 staff by the end of 2024.
- Model providers
- BP has named only one model vendor for general use: Microsoft, whose Copilot for Microsoft 365 BP adopted as a launch partner in Nov 2023 with access planned for a substantial part of its global workforce from early 2024. Emeka Emembolu said in Oct 2025 that teams also use generative AI inside Palantir Foundry, where a Sep 2024 five-year deal added Palantir's AIP software to bring large language models into BP's decisions, and BP's Feb 2025 capital markets materials list equipment reliability analytics on Palantir's AI engine among the technologies under development. BP built the Wells Assistant, which it compares to Copilot or ChatGPT for wells data and told Rigzone in Jul 2025 was developed with frontier large language models, and the PlantPulse generative AI assistant, but has not named the models behind either; Murray Auchincloss said in Nov 2025 that drilling teams worked with large language models on kick detection. BP's maintenance teams use Databricks AI/BI Genie conversational agents (Jun 2026).
- Data and infrastructure
- BP calls itself cloud first, with more than 95% of its data in the cloud (Oct 2025). BP began moving its two European mega data centers and about 900 key applications to AWS in Dec 2019, with more than 60% of those workloads migrated a year later, and named Microsoft Azure as a cloud for its infrastructure in a Sep 2020 partnership. A BP session at Databricks' Jun 2026 summit said upstream data runs on Azure and retail on AWS, with Databricks SQL as the warehouse across both clouds and Unity Catalog for governance. BP's Center for High-Performance Computing in Houston runs seismic imaging, reservoir engineering and well planning; Emeka Emembolu said in Aug 2025 that BP had quadrupled its capacity with NVIDIA for 5 to 10 times faster processing, BP still described the quadrupling as under way in Jan 2026, and Penguin Solutions said in Jul 2026 that it had built a GPU platform for the center on NVIDIA HGX B200 systems, with a 2026 expansion that nearly doubles its seismic imaging capacity. bpx energy keeps its operational, engineering and financial data in a single cloud-based data lake (Jan 2026).
Platforms and internal tools
Palantir Foundry2014
Palantir Foundry is BP's main data and analytics platform, used in the upstream since 2014 for data structure and optimization and more recently for AI, including a model-based digital twin of BP's oil and gas production. A five-year deal in Sep 2024 added Palantir's AIP software for large language models. BP uses Foundry for equipment reliability analytics, contractor and invoice reviews, and generative AI work, and planned in Feb 2025 to bring the same approach to its refineries.
Unified data platform (Databricks and Palantir)Announced Aug 2025
BP's unified data platform, built with Databricks and Palantir, is meant to replace about 100,000 data pipelines with one governed source across upstream, downstream, trading and finance, so that AI and large language models can use all of BP's data. Murray Auchincloss expected it around mid-2026 (Nov 2025); BP has not said whether it was completed.
Copilot for Microsoft 365Nov 2023
BP was one of the first launch partners for Copilot for Microsoft 365 and planned to roll out access across a substantial part of its global workforce from early 2024; BP has not published how many employees have access.

Adoption
BP spread AI in layers. Machine learning came first in exploration and drilling, where BP said in Jul 2019 that about 800 scientists and engineers were learning data science and that a data science sandbox ran on its Houston supercomputer. BP moved most of its data to AWS and Azure from 2019, joined the Copilot for Microsoft 365 launch in Nov 2023, and put in-house generative AI tools such as the Wells Assistant into production by 2025, when it had 700 users; BP said in Jul 2025 that its wells and subsurface AI assistants were available to more than 2,000 users. BP has published no company-wide count of AI users; Emeka Emembolu said in Oct 2025 that many teams use generative AI daily, and the Databricks maintenance agents had reached 400 users with about 9,000 planned in Jun 2026.

Economics & controls
Spend and ROI
Technology budget
BP does not publish a technology, IT or AI budget. BP's research and development expenditure was $274 million in 2025, down from $301 million in 2024, and BP says its research spend will focus increasingly on finding and producing oil and gas at lower cost. BP is quadrupling the capacity of its Houston high-performance computing center (Oct 2025).
What AI itself costs
BP has not disclosed what it spends on AI models, licenses or cloud computing for AI. Databricks' summary of a BP session at its Jun 2026 summit described $10 of free Genie usage per user per month, about 80 to 100 questions, and BP's per-agent cost caps to keep consumption predictable as use grows. Emeka Emembolu said in Aug 2025 that the technology organisation was reducing its own costs by cutting staff, contractors, applications and partners.
Reported ROI
BP told investors in Feb 2025 that AI and advanced analytics, together with surveillance and real-time monitoring, helped increase BP-operated production by about 4% from 2022 to 2024 and protected about 10% more from going offline. BP said in Jul 2026 that new tools had helped increase BP-operated production by about 2% a year over five years, around 20,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day, without separating AI from other technology. BP has published no firm-level dollar figure for AI, and Palantir's claim that Foundry helped BP capture 30,000 barrels a day appears only on Palantir's site.
Productivity markers
BP reported a record upstream plant reliability of 96.1% in 2025, which its annual report says technology helped lift, and Murray Auchincloss credited AI fault prediction, alongside equipment spending, for the nearly 97% reached in the third quarter of 2025; reliability was 95.3% in the third quarter of 2026. BP said in Feb 2025 that its wells organization runs with about 15% fewer people per rig line than four years earlier, thanks to a new work model and digital efficiencies. Meg O'Neill said in Oct 2026 that data and AI tools helped bpx energy field staff raise production uptime.
Costs and headcount
BP's structural cost reductions, which include the outcome of digital and technology deployment as well as divestments and workforce cuts, reached about $4 billion by Oct 2026, which BP said is within its 2027 target range before the Castrol and Gelsenkirchen divestments; Kate Thomson said in Aug 2026 that the savings were not yet sufficiently visible in earnings. BP had 93,700 employees at the end of 2025, down from 100,500, expected about 4,700 roles to be affected by organisational simplification (Feb 2025), and had exited about 3,200 contractors by Aug 2025. Reuters reported in Jan 2025 that Emeka Emembolu told his team about 1,100 technology roles would go through redundancies or by moving work from the UK and US to Hungary, India and Malaysia. BP has not credited AI with any specific headcount reduction.
Governance and risk
AI as a principal risk
BP's 2025 Annual Report says the fast advance of generative and agentic AI brings significant opportunities and emerging systemic risk, and that without clear organization-wide governance BP may underperform, miss upside or fall behind on safe and compliant AI deployment. BP lists growing AI adoption among the drivers of its digital, cyber security and data risk, alongside rising expectations on data sovereignty and the ethical use of AI.
Controls and responsible AI
BP manages digital risk against the NIST Cybersecurity Framework and internal requirements for cyber security, digital infrastructure, data privacy and responsible AI, according to its 2025 Annual Report. The EVP Technology leads the assessment and management of cyber risk with the chief information security officer, and a digital safety operational risk committee of senior digital leaders helps keep cyber risks identified and managed.
Board oversight
BP's board received updates in 2025 on the technology functional reorganization, the digital transformation programme and strategic partnerships, and held deep-dive sessions on the deployment of generative AI across BP's businesses. BP's audit committee put particular emphasis on digital transformation in 2025, the safety and sustainability committee reviewed emerging cyber risks from AI, and a non-executive director chaired a BP digital advisory council during 2025.
Data readiness before AI
BP scores datasets for AI readiness on five dimensions, with data quality weighted most at 30%, and releases only datasets scoring four or five to conversational agents, according to Databricks' summary of a BP session at its Jun 2026 summit, which noted that a single wrong answer can set adoption back.
People decide
BP describes its production AI as advisory: Optimization Genie recommends changes and engineers determine the safest and most feasible ones to make (Apr 2025), and BP says its machine learning tools for equipment problems support and enhance human expertise (Oct 2025).

Quick answers
- How does BP deploy AI?
- BP deploys AI mainly through tools its own teams build, such as Optimization Genie for oil and gas production, the Wells Assistant and the PlantPulse maintenance assistant, alongside Palantir's Foundry and AIP software and a unified data platform it is building with Databricks and Palantir; staff also use Microsoft Copilot. EVP Technology Emeka Emembolu owns digital and AI from BP's leadership team. BP credits AI with extra barrels and record plant reliability but has published no AI budget, no company-wide user count and no firm-level AI return.
- What does BP use AI for?
- BP has named more than a dozen AI tools in production or pilot across wells, production optimization, maintenance, seismic imaging, supply chain and retail, but has published no total count of use cases. BP has reported a business return for three of them: Optimization Genie, the UK stores' AI stock replenishment system and an AI agent trial at Aral stations in Germany. For AI as a whole, BP credits AI and advanced analytics, together with real-time monitoring, with about 4% more BP-operated production from 2022 to 2024, and has published no AI-specific financial return for the company.
- Who leads AI at BP?
- AI at BP is led by Emeka Emembolu (EVP, Technology). Ownership of AI on the org chart: Emeka Emembolu, EVP Technology, on the leadership team.
- What AI platform does BP use?
- BP builds its own AI tools, such as Optimization Genie, the Wells Assistant and PlantPulse, has used Palantir Foundry since 2014 and added Palantir's AIP in a five-year deal in Sep 2024, and set out in Aug 2025 to merge about 100,000 data pipelines into one platform with Databricks and Palantir by mid-2026.
- Which AI models does BP use?
- BP has not named the models behind its in-house tools; it said in Jul 2025 that the Wells Assistant uses frontier large language models, and employees use Copilot for Microsoft 365, where BP was a launch partner in Nov 2023, and generative AI inside Palantir Foundry (Oct 2025).
- How many BP employees use AI?
- BP has published no company-wide count of AI users; its wells and subsurface AI assistants were available to more than 2,000 users in Jul 2025, and Emeka Emembolu said in Oct 2025 that many BP teams use generative AI daily.
- How far has AI spread at BP?
- BP sits at Scaling: EVP Technology Emeka Emembolu, a member of the leadership team, owns digital and AI; BP runs AI in production across wells, production optimization, maintenance, seismic imaging and UK store replenishment; and its executives report results on earnings calls, such as the record upstream plant reliability Murray Auchincloss credited partly to AI in Nov 2025. BP's reach rests on statements rather than counts: it was a launch partner for Copilot for Microsoft 365 in Nov 2023 and says many teams use generative AI daily. BP falls short of Embedded because it has published no weekly use by most of its 93,700 employees and no AI-specific financial return.
